MSD or other?

I have a 460 pulling tractor that has been modified. I would like a more powerful spark to clean things up a bit. It has points right now. I would like to try the multi-spark systems. What kit do I need to buy? What should I watch out for? I have this posted on the pulling board, but I thought the more eyes the better. thanks

A Davis Unified Ignition or DUI would be a simple bolt in. It adapts a GM HEI unit to a Ford distributor. We are talking about a Ford 460, correct?

If not then a pertronix kit installed in your stock dizzy seems to work well.

you can keep your points with the MSD, they will work as the trigger and will last alot longer than with a conventional ignition as they will not have near the voltage passing through them. Dave

In order to use the points in the system, do you have to order some type of electric pickup or is it all included when you order the box?

If you want to really do it right and eliminate spark scatter. That's timing variations. Caused by gear lash, bushing play and shaft windup/wind down caused by each cylinder firing.
There is a reason why auto manufactures read the engine position from crank sensors. And gone away from using distributers altogether.
Use an inductive pickup on the flywheel and and electronic unit controlling advance.
MSD fires the plug extra times at low rpms. This gives another chance for ignition should the mixture be plenty lean or rich. or if the plugs are loaded up from idling too rich & cold.
MSD can reduce the tendency of detonation/knock. Sometimes the same power can still be obtained with an MSD and a couple or a few degrees less advance.
