MT Lubricants

I"m looking for information as to the recommended lubricants for my MT"s transmission / differential and final drives. Looked through the archives, and got everything I need to know for the T-O-M and crankcase, but would apprecite pointers for other lubricants.

Also, I assume that checking the levels for the tranny / diff and final drives is as straighforward as it seems; fill to the top of the "inspection" plug? If this isn"t right, please advise.

Seems to me that when I got this tractor a year or so ago, I had found an operator"s manual type of publication on the internet somewhere that recommended fluids, inspection and replacement intervals, etc... Either I imagined it, or I"ve lost it, so if anyone knows where to find such info, I"d appreciate knowing that as well.

Sorry to appear so dull, but I"m more of a car guy, and not really a real tractor guy (yet!).

PS: I"ve got the I&T shop manual for the MT, but that"s little help for fluids and maintenance. It"s great for repairs, I imagine....

Trans, diff and final if you live in a colder area 80/90 gear oil and if in a warmer area 85/140 gear oil

You can find manuals on Ebay and from John Deere's website for the MT. I have one of the same year and like to do work with it. It's a fun tractor to toy around with. How do you like yours? I have an older style 3 point on mine and would like to upgrade to a newer aftermarket design.

Hey, GAHayFarmer; that's one sweet lookin' JD! I got one looks just like it!

Like you, I just toy around with it, but I consider it a real "working" tractor, and not built for show.

I have a 3-point I got from Tony's Tractors and it works like a charm. It spends nearly all the time connected to a 6-foot brush hog for keeping the front field under control. The only real gripe I have is that the weight of the brush hog makes the front of the MT a little light. I suppose I could fix that with some weights, but haven't felt the need.

Thanks, 430WLPG, for the recommendation. That would have been my guess, but I would have guessed that I was wrong. I never would have thought, for example, that straight 10W would be what's in the T-O-M, so better to ask and be safe.
