I am plain confused. I looked through the archives and just got more confused.

How do you tell a M from a MT from a MTN? What were the options for the different models? Thanks.

Or do you mean an M from an MTW ? an MT with a wide front option.

The serial number plate is on the dash under the light switch. This would be the first place to look if you were right there in front of the tractor. It would say M or MT and an MTW would have the wide front or it could be MTN with a single front wheel.
If you only have pictures to look at then try to get one of the rear tires wheels and axles. A model M has 24" rear tires with a drop down final drive with a large cast iron center and no axle sticking out, just a large nut in the center holding the casting to the short axle.
Now an MT will have straight final drives with long axles sticking out with small casting clamped to the axle and 34" rims bolted to them.
Another thing is an MT has a hole in the center of the front grill with a casting nub sticking out to bolt things to. An M just has a solid smooth grill center.

M - has wide front end
model "M"

MT - has two wheels tricycle front end
model "M" "T"ricycle

MTN - one wheel tricycle front end
model "M" "T"ricycle "N" narrow

mikes also correct

M - wide front...droped final drives...Offset tractor

MT - 2 wheel narrow front...straight rear axle...center line tractor.

MTN - 1 wheel narrow front...straight rear
axle...center line tractor

MTW - wide front...straight rear axle...center line tractor

MT = 34 inch rears (also available with widefront)
MTN = 34 rears and single front
M = standard tractor, smaller 24 inch rears, hub caps on front tires. (looks like an oversized lawn mower, if you will)

"Sparky" is Nancy's 51M; notice the wide front.

"Sam" is our 51M with the tricycle front.

We do not have a single-wheel MTN.

Hope this helps.

Those last pictures reminds me, the MT has a hole in the front of the grill and the M don’t. It appears Mr Howell had a typo on his last picture, that is a 51MT not a 51M as posted.

Also notice the seat is higher than the hydro levers on the MT and the MT had dual touchomatic while the M has a single lever. The rear rockshaft on the MT has double and independent lift arms on the left and a single arm on the right.
