MTD snowblower

I got this from a guy at work for my daughter. I cleaned the carb and put in a new spark plug and now it runs good. Does anybody know what the bar sticking up in front by the auger is for? There is one on each side, no holes in the end for anything to bolt to. It's a MTD Snowflite 5/24. Thanks, Chris

The Bar sticking up is a drift cutter, there should be one on each side. Drift Cutters knife their way through high drifts that would otherwize fall in on the cleared path. My advice, take them off, unless you know you will need them. [ Mine wingnut on ]

Yes that is right! Drift cutters. There should be two bolts in the bottom and the top should be pointing towards the front(away from the operator).

They also serve as service stands for undercarriage service.With gas drained or cap"sealed",machine will stand on it's nose for tire or drive mechanism serice.

Thank you for the reply's. Makes sense now, I never thought of that before. I must be lucky in this new year. It would run for a litle bit and die, start right back up. He said to take it and see if I could get it to run better, so I picked it up yesterday and brought it home. Today I cleaned the carb out and changed the plug and it started right up and I let it run in the back of my pickup for about 1/2 hour, no problems. I called him and said I got it going, how much for it. He said $50 so I said sold. Then feeling lucky, I took the carb off my generator and cleaned it and put a kit I had in it and it ran good also. If I can rebuild the carb on the farmall 400 and get it to run I'll have a hat trick.Thanks again, Chris

Just clean the 400 carb like you did on the blower and it will fine. Double check for any dirt or rust that may be in the jets. Shake the float and listen for any gas, if you hear gas sloshing it's probably has a pin hole in it. Hal
