This MTD has a 12HP Briggs.Been sitting over several months.Fired it up and ran terrible.Cleaned the carb, and fired it up ran the same.Thought the valves may be stuck so i put some ATF in the gas.Done this before on an old CA Allis-Chalmers,and worked like a charm then.Fired it up and still the same ole rough running engine. But sooner than later the ole Briggs smoothed right out and ran like a new Singer.Mowed with it until it ran out of gas.Filled it up and started the engine and shore enough it was back running the same sloppy way it was. So i put some more ATF in the gas as it was running and it smoothed right out.Do you recon the valves is sticking in the block?Do i need to lightly hone the block for the valves to work freely? What do you think?Let me know. Thanks

Try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank, after you clean out the tank, change the oil, a new spark plug, new air filter and fuel filter, and new gasoline! And check the fuel lines for age cracking. Might just surprise you with how it runs. I don't think you need to hone the block, but you might want to check it, if all else fails. Don't take it apart until you have done the other stuff. And, read the other posts here, pertaining to single cylinder lawn tractor engines. A lot of good info here!
