MV or SMV

Cant read the tag, how do I idetify weather this is a MV or SMV? Tractor has had engine replaced. Thanks for any imput

Well first I would look at the casting codes in the tractor. Also you can look for the engine serial number. Or you could try spraying the serial # tag with water and that may make the numbers stand out.

My guess, since the tractor has a magneto, it is an MV, not a SMV.

If the wide front is original its a late SMV, Stage 2. Looks like it may have disc brakes, but that doesn't make it a super for certain. Let me know if the starter has 2 or 3 bolts mounting it to clutch housing, then we can go from there. Interesting front and rear rims with the exstender plates. Looks like the front hubs for 20 inch rims, so I wonder what size is on there. Is the rear tires 40 inch? Lots of modifacations on tractor so it could have parts that don't match a certain year.

Forgot, on the engine above oil filter look for 356980 RI Below that # look for C264, on toward the front in the same general height look for date code ending in X or Y. also look for the engine serial # stamped in just above tappet cover. (Cover with breather pipe.) If it doesn't have the above its most likely not a regular SM engine.

Tried water on the tag, no luck, tag is worn beyond most recognition. Only numbers I found on the block were :UBKM10594 and 6943. But previous owner said the engine was swapped with a power unit several years ago, and he does not have the original block. He said it was a super m is the only reason I'm trying to find the answer. It has different wheel configurations than two other MVs that came in the deal. Thanks for any further information.

But there was an engine swap, and unfortunatly the owner didn't keep the original block.

Thats a power unit code C 248 engine. The front axle looks like a IH round tube high crop axle and was only used starting at SMV serial # F 45371 . On the right side it looks like disc brake plate with drum missing. So the rear would be a late M on to a SM at the least.

You are correct about the engine, the fellow told me he swapped it with a back up pump engine with only 8 or 10 hours on it. I think he said U6?

Looked at left side picture and the center housing serial # is on looks like ones used on SM tractors F 28175 and higher. Think it is F 28200 and higher for SMV but can't remember for sure without looking it up. It may be a super except for engine but other parts added on are not original Super.

Only numbers readable on the ID tag are 4777 then looks like an A and then an O. And I am guessing at these numbers and letters as they are so worn. I will pull the tag off and try a few other techniques this weekend.

Under model, there is an obvious V stamped, and then there is what appears to be an M before the V, and I think there is a character before the M, but the tag is bent and creased in that spot.

Can you clarify "other parts" I am not a Farmall collecter, trying to learn a little as I go.

If the chassis is a late SMV it would originaly of had a battery box under a different seat. Looks like the starter doesn't have the switch on top with a pull rod to work it as late SMV should have. Can't see the gauge box on steering post, for late SMV it should have a amp gauge , fuse holder, on off switch and light switch. also the steering post should have 2 holes low on post for mounting the regulator with 1/4 inch bolts. M or early SM didn't use these exact features. It does look like the gear shifter is the one used with battery box under seat. Can't be sure from picture but looks like the rear gas tank support has the bracket on the clutch pedal side that starter,choke and belt pulley engaging rod were held in when a live pump and reservoir were not used on a stage 2 super. If the bracket is there the tractor probably came without live hydraulics. Thats about all I can tell from picture and its hard to tell exactly how things are, so I could be mistaken on some things. Leaving the engine and parts out since you know its changed.
