My 60 update

My 60 wouldn't fire up since about 1 1/2 yr. ago. I've been in here asking for suggestions as far as what steps I should take in troubleshooting. I have put in new 3116 plugs set at .030", points look good & set properly, put in new condenser, new rotor button, new distributor cap, new (dealer provided) plug & coil wires, new coil. I'm going to drain all the old gas out & put fresh in before I even try turning it over so I know gas is fresh even though I've stabilized with Startron. A guy at work mentioned it would be a good idea to take the float cover off & do a cleaning, then reinstall cause some of the newstyle gas could have gummed things up in there. Once I put the new gas in (not sure if best to use regular or high test)if I can't get gas to each cylinder properly I'm going to send the carb to Shelby for it to be completely worked over. Please view in pic the float. Do I just remove it by bolt in bottom? Any suggestions here appreciated. Buick & Deere, John Deere D you were very helpful in my posting about a month ago. I appreciate that.
Arnie
PS- If I hook up a timing light to each plug separately will it light up as I get spark to each cylinder?

Remove the plug (on the left) first and drain the bowl, don't remove the bowl, chances are strong it will not seal back up...

I put a petcock on my carb drain because I figured I'd screw something up someday. I always viewed those bowls and the bottom of the carb to be pretty fragile. I saw a busted one once, but don't know how much force it took to break it. Local farm store had petcocks in the air compressor isle.

Yes to the O.P. on the timing light.

ok...I'm confused. Are you calling what's in the original pic a "bowl" instead of float? I always figured the bowl to be the glass filtration bowl as seen in THIS pic. Is the first mentioned a float as I thought maybe it might be (kinda like a float on a small carb on a lawn mower, etc.)?
Arnie
PS- Please excuse my stupedness of some questions. I'm not real educated on these old tractors. patience, please !!!!

Your first set of pictures had the float bowl for the carburetor. The second pic is of the sediment bowl which filters the fuel before it reaches the carburetor. Both should be clean. But both will usually require new gaskets after removing.

(quoted from post at 16:56:59 12/29/14) Probably not....

You never know. The float bowl gasket is a pretty sure no, but the sediment bowl is a definite maybe. I'm stopping by my dealer in the morning to get sediment bowl gaskets for my Dubuques and Waterloos. My dealer had at least 2 of each, which is what I'm picking up.

Adrian

Your dealer should have both : R10171r , float bowl gasket , & C1778R sediment bowl gasket; My dealer shows 5- of R10171 & 4- C1778r. on hand... $2.06 & $3.33 each..

Sounds like I have a choice here: either get the gaskets from the dealer so I have them on hand before taking the bowls off....or just take the carbeurator off & send it to Shelby.
Thanks,
Arnie

Hi Arnie
Just a word of caution about removing the float bowl on the carburetor, the nut holding the float bowl on can be rusted tight and it is possible to snap off the stem threads on the carb. Some penetrating oil and patience usually needed. I have all the gaskets in stock. I'm still here if needed.

Mike, from the reputation you have in these forums I believe "YOU'RE ALWAYS NEEDED". I had wondered about that bolt...kind of scared to touch it. You confirm my cautiousness. I believe I'm going to just take the carb off & send it to you. I must have subconsciously known that yesterday when I ran to the shop where I work even though I'm on vacation & picked up a box to ship it with. I'm going to line the inside of a heavy cardboard box with plywood bottom, walls, & top so it can hold up to UPS bouncing it around without breaking out.

Trying to think ahead while the carb is out for cleaning & rebuild I thought I would make sure once it's back that it can breath properly by doing a cleaning on the canister air filter. Anything special to watch out for here?
