After this storm their path to the water trough hot all blown in. For 2 days they would not venture out from the feed spot. Just stayed there eating snow. So I thought what the heck I will pretend I’m a cow and walk a path for these babies. Walked there and back and then drove around to the water water tank and called them. Then one sticks its head out and starts plugging away to the belly. Then the rest look and think ok we have a leader let’s go. They been walking that path for years. Didn’t think that heavy snow would prevent them from going to water. The leader here. Had their drink and hoofed it back.

That tank looks to be in a remote location. How do you keep the water from freezing, both in the tank and in the source of the water?

I put on snowshoes and walked around the woods for the dogs to follow. They only do there business in the woods and out of sight of the house if they can, they like there privacy LOL. Its funny to watch them try to find that perfect spot (here it is nope, here it is over here no no, here? no, hurry hurry this spot has to do.) Now I have to teach them not to do it near my maple trees. Hemlocks, Oaks, Birch and Beach are all ok but stay away from the maples during sugaring season.

Like this , pump the water into the tank from the dugout every 2 days. And keep the home fires burning ,lol. Tamarack firewood, best wood for heat next to coal, as in high heat. Cows must have been thirsty with only snow for 2 days. Drank it dry and filled it again this evening.

What's the old saying? Lead, follow, or get the he!! out of the way! I was wondering why the water was so far from the feedlot, but when you said dugout then I thought you were in Canada, that's a common term in Western Canada where it's hard to get a water well. We had a big tank in a shed with a frostproof hydrant, but it would ice up in cold weather, this was near International Falls MN, famous for being cold. The solution was to haul hot water from the house (300 feet) and add to the tank to melt the ice. I built a special sled to haul an 8 gallon cream can on, still have it.
