Any thoughts on how or why it might have happend and will it be an issue moving forward in fixing her up?

That hole is supposed to be there. It's the way the casting was made. I hope this info helps!

Wonder if the oil thrown off the ring gear goes down the round hole below the larger hole? Maybe the oil then goes down
to lube the pinion bearings?

(quoted from post at 19:17:34 12/07/20) Thank you very much for your response. I will continue my journey down the rabbit hole.

I would turn my breeko block right side up. Thety aren't very strong laying on the side, like that.especially when you put the weight of the tractor on them.. Hate to see the rabbit hole collapse while your down there.

(quoted from post at 14:01:16 12/08/20) Is the ring gear the same for all "N " Fords??

This is the "chunk" out of it. 9N # 7222 Appears to be copper clad? Never seen one before.Another mystery.

Good catch! Don't use concrete blocks laid on their sides they will collapse. I don't use them at all, use wood blocks.

In 9n/2n/8n Same fluid could be passed from case to case. Later models, individual cases, different fluids, had no hole
