N Serial Number Help

I just recently aquired what I believe is a 2n of 9n. However, the serial number I found behind the starter reads as follows NJ140 directly below those reading vertically is the number 8N-B. Can anyone help me to identify this? Thanks

That is not the serial number but a casting date for the engine. The seral number is STAMPED not cast in a flat boss just aft of the oil filter near the top of the block. See John Smith's web site for more info.

It may be a"mongrel",a tractor made up of different parts.If it has a 4 speed tranny,it's an 8n,a3sp tranny,a9n or 2n. Anyway,if it's a good one it's a good one.---lha

Thanks I just found out from his website that I was looking in the wrong place for the serial number. I will have to see if I can find it tonight.

Well if it is a 3 speed but has the side mount distributor you own a MUTT. You have one that was made from 2 or 3 or more tractors. Some things you can do to figure out more is get the serial number off the engine which is just below the head on the left side about center of the engine and is stamped on a flat spot there. That will tell you what year your engine is by going to the serial number list on the left of this page. Then also look on the axle trumpets for things like 2N$$% that will tell you if they are 2N or 9N axles etc

When you are getting the number be careful. I used an old toothbrush (some people use a brass brush) and some gasoline to rub off the old grease and rust that was on that spot until I could finally read it with a magnifying glass (I'm only half blind!). As the gas dries it is easier to read. Gene

I would say the engine was built about 10-14-1950.Should have side mount distributor, that's what the 8nB means. don b1
