When my '53 Jubilee is up on blocks, the brakes on both sides work perfectly. When the tractor is on the ground, my brakes don't work on one side and just barely
on the other side. I can adjust them so the pedals are hard, but don't work. What's going on here? How can I fix them? Thanks.

Do you see any oil leaking on the inside of the wheels? It is very common that oil gets into the brakes making them inoperable.

I agree with Abby, but to fix them you are going to have to replace the axle seals and the brake shoes. You can't just wipe them off. As soon as they get warm the oil will just come up to the surface.

there is no sign of oil or grease leaking out. the shoes are clean. i've replaced the seals, springs, and shoes. could it be the backing plate is worn or
warped or perhaps the node on the end of the pedal rod is worn down to the point the brakes won't activate when the tractor is on the ground?

Oops, I didn't know you had already replace all those parts. If you can adjust them to the point where the peddle is hard it doesn't sound like what you call the node is worn that bad. How do the breaks work while backing up?

I'm sorry but I can't see your reply. Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see, not sure what this means, I don't see anywhere to click Modern View.

Its there somewhere modern view is all I use... Why some are stuck on Classic I dunno...

I have had the shoes get glazed and then the brakes do not work well. I take the shoes off and then remove the glazed surface on the shoe with a rigt angle grinder. Then reassemble. This has really helped me on several occasions especially with shoes that had been used for some time.
Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I've received new drums and brake shoes for each side. Hopefully it will take care of the problem. Thanks.
