NAA Charging problem..

I posted a few weeks ago about a problem with my Jube. overcharging. I removed the generator and new regulator and took it to a generator shop, the regulator was deemed bad and a new one was ordered. Installed the new regulator and purchased a new amp meter to make all the components new. Ran fine 7.2 volts at battery and 10 amps at start up then back to barely charging. I thought I was done. The next day after mowing for about 30 mins,I glanced down and amp meter was at 25-30 amps. Took it home, the regulator was hot to the touch. Removed reg. and genny again and back to the shop.... It tested fine. Every thing is new including the battery..Any ideas ? Gary

if oem, that genny is B circuit.. meaning it needs the reg to provide power to the field for the genny to charge..

start her up.. does she charge max again?

pull field wire at vreg.. charge go away? yes? bad reg.

no? then pull field wire at genny... charge go away? yes? then the armature wire is shorted to the field wire in the harness.

no? genny has issues.. field is getting power from armature somehow...

at that point I'd try a motor test.. belt off, apply power to armature.. if genny spins with no wire on the field.. then genny needs work.

post back.

e sure ground is good from generator to metal part of regulator case.

yep.. if there is resistance in ground from vreg grnd ref to ground.. then charge rate will go up....

thgat's a trick we used to do with vreg IC's.. ie.. arifically float or bias 'ground' to increase output V..
