NAA Generator Keeps Charging

The amp meter used to drop down to zero after a few minutes, but now shows 10A continuously while running. It has the original 6V generator, positive ground (with electronic ignition). Battery is two years old. Do I need to look for a problem?

ake a battery voltage reading after running at speed for half an hour.

I might have added that when I turn the light on, the needle drops down from +10 to +5, just the opposite of what I would have expected. --Peter

Verify that the field and ground wire at the generator are not reversed or that the field wire is not grounded.

I'd say you have a problem. Put a voltmeter on the battery. If it climbs past 7.5, you likely have a stuck contact inside the voltage regulator.

heet happens.........so many make the mistake of thinking that all others are the same as what the have. Probably done it myself. :wink:

Thank you for the suggestions. Here is where the situation still stands:
* The battery shows 6.6V before and after running the engine for 1/2 hour. All the while, ammeter is showing +10.
* Took the cover off the (newish) voltage regulator. Contacts are not stuck. Holding either contact in the opposite position causes the ammeter to show zero momentarily.
* As to the wiring at the generator: no nothing has been crossed-wired, nor appears grounded.

Hmm...

Last week I took out the distributor and coil, but of course, that wouldn't cause the charging problem I'm now having. I mention this only to point out that this is a new problem, but I don't
think I caused it. --Peter

Your ammeter should show a constant charge when running so a 5-10 A reading is normal. When you engage the lights, the ammeter should show a drop, not an increase -why would you think that? Your battery may be the culprit. How old is it? Applying a charge does not ensure it is good. It must withstand a charge under load. Take it to your local starter/alternator shop and have them bench test it on their special load meter/machine. He can also check your generator, VR, and ammeter as well, all usually at no charge -pun intended. It is also a good idea to invest in a good brand of battery and avoid he 'bargain-house' brands. Cheaper batteries have a life expectancy of 2 years max. Interstate and DEKA are good brands and do not get a deep cycle one. Specify GRP 1 6-VOLT AG USE. I'd also verify all the wiring is correct as well.

Thanks for the reply Tim. I don't understand the charging system, So I assumed that when the lights are on, the draw from the battery is increased, so the voltage regulator would up the charge, thus the ammeter would show a higher number.

Am I the only one who read that part of the thread?

If the generator is REALLY charging 10 Amps and the battery voltage remains at 6.6 Volts, WHAT does this tell us???
