NAA just pops won't start

54 NAA will not start.
-Electronic ignition.
-12 V conversion.
Ran last yearo n points. over winter put in electronic ignition. Now will not start.
-It has spark.
-New plugs.
-Fuel pouring out the carb bowl.
-correct firing order...
-1243 clockwise rotation.
I also has a spare coil and spare electronic ignition and tried both so i know its not those 2 things.
it turns over and just backfires once in awhile.
I had it sputtering the other day with a twist on the distributor but thats it.
I am thinking it is a timing issue but dont have a timing light here. (little bro never returned it)
I tried starting fluid aswell and still nothing.
I really need this to run so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start with the basics:

1) Confirm #1 piston is on Compression stroke.
2) Line up flywheel timing marks in the window.
3) Confirm Rotor is pointing towards #1 nipple on distributor cap.
4) Confirm spark plug wires are connected to cap in Correct Firing Order based on direction of Rotor rotation.

If the last time it ran was before winter, I suspect the gasoline may be bad,(unless you filled with new) and now it has become flooded and the plugs need to be cleaned from the invisible deposits which are keeping it from starting. Don't think timing would have been an issue, but may be now that you fooled with the distributor.

(quoted from post at 19:05:32 08/25/11) Gas was changed, not flooding as plugs are clean , dry and brand new plugs.
once you have done what awhtx listed, then with ign on rotate distributor body back & forth and #1 should spark. Your timing will be when it sparks as distributor body is rotated CCW (opposite of shaft rotation). Lock it down at that point.

I've had a lot of trouble with sticking valves on my 660 in the past. It's the ethinol gas.

Do a compression check or if you don't have a compression tester just take out all the plugs and stick a finger in the hole and crank over to see if all cylinders have compression. If not off with the valve cover!!!! Easiest to take the gas tank loose and pry it up some so the valve cover will come out. Saves taking the hood etc off.

Thank you very much for all your input.
SAturday I will be attempting to put them into action and get this NAA back in the field!
I'll post my results!
have a great night!

ok so i got it to TDC in # 1 cylinder.
rotor is at # 1 nipple.
firing order is 1243 clockwise rotation.
It fired up after all this but only quickly so i know i am on the right track.
I got it running for a bout 30 seconds but have to use starting fluid. and I have been cranking so much i wore the teeth off the Bendix.
That or my timing maybe too advanced and it killed it like that.
So obvioulsy i am further ahead then before so happy about that but it is still not running.
So now have to wait for a new bendix to arrive .
does anyone know a napa part # ?
Thanks !
