NAA side cover

1954 naa. side cover behind the distributor / coil was leaking pretty good so i cahnged the gasket. old one was in pretty bad shape. now it leaks jsut as much if not more. all 3 bolts are tight. its a thick cork gasket should this need some sealant on it too? or maybe im collecting too much oil in there is there supposed to be a drain outside of just through the lifters? if there is and its clogged that could be the problem. thanks.

more likely is that you don't have 100% of the old gasket off the block or the cover.. or the cover may even be warped from over tightening.

check those first.

It has been a year and a half since I had one of those open, but IIRC, there is an up and a down side. one side up will hold oil between the gasket and cover the other won't. I can't imagine getting an engine gunked up badly enough to slow down the flow of oil out of the gallery, but you could try squirting some oil in and check that it goes down. most likely as SouNdguy says you have a chunk of cork preventing it from sealing.

leaking along the bottom edge of teh gasket. have leaks in places where it had not leaked before the new gasket. picking up a new one today. double and triple check for old gasket material - although the original one came off pretty clean / intact - and then i'll put the cover on without the gasket to see if it rocks at all. then put it back together with the new gasket.

When I replaced the gasket on my Jubilee, I gave it a thin coat of RTV, let silicone harden for an hour. NO RUNS, NO DRIPS, NO ERRORS.
