NAA Transmission

I am rebuilding the engine in my Ford NAA. There was some oil in the bell housing, so I thought I would change the transmission front seal while the tractor was split. I have not pulled the transmission input shaft off yet but noticed quite a bit of end play in the shaft, almost a quarter inch. My manual does not talk about end play, only shimming to get the proper preload on the bearings. I guess at this point I am considering pulling the transmission and replacing the bearings since I am this far into it. A bearign and seal kit is listed on this site for $100.00. Anyone have experience with this task? Any advice and things to look for will be appreciated. Thanks.

When the preload is correct, there is no endplay. If this is your first time inside the tranny, take a pic of every component before removing it so you will know exactly where and how it goes when it's time for reassembly. Having access to a hydraulic press and an assortment of pullers will make the job less painful. Some of the seals run on replacable wear sleeves Check for deep grooves on the sleeves. They are available (pricey) if they need to be replaced. If CNH doesn't have them, check with your local bearing supplier. A factory parts manual is a good investment. Among other usefull info, there are assembly diagrams for reference.

Thanks for the reply Dave. That is kind of what I expected to hear knowing the shafts run on tapered roller bearings. I guess I will pull the transmission after I get the motor put back together. I decided to pull the top cover off to have a look inside and the good news is I didn’t see any broken teeth and it looked pretty clean. I will look closer after I drain the oil. I am a little surprised at the amount of end play from just worn bearings so I may find a bigger problem when I take it apart. I do have a pretty descent shop with a hydraulic press and several different pullers. Will keep this posting up if I find anything interesting or need help. Thanks again.
