Need advice

I recently picked up an 8n. I noticed the right wheel wasn't rolling very easily in gear. In neutral on concrete, I could push the right wheel backwards but not forwards. There was one spot that it would hang some.

Finally got the tire off and brake drum off today.

I am not a mechanic but everything looks good to me. There were no broken springs and I think the shoes look good. They are about 10mm thick. Before taking the drum off I spun the adjuster all the way down but the drum came off pretty hard.

I put the drum back on and now I can spin it both ways. It still wants to hang in one spot some but not as bad. I can feel a small groove in the drum towards the back side.

Is there anything else I should look at or adjust? Should I have the drum turned down?

I don't understand why just taking it off would allow it to move now. I don't know if it will help, but I will attach some pics. Thank you and Happy 4th!

You backed off the adjuster is why it is better now. I would run it and use the brakes a lot, it will get better.

I agree, sounds like it was too tight on the adjustment

Another option is to put an angle in the leading edges
of your brake shoes. Might help keep them from grabbing.
Doesn't take much, just round the corner. A file would do it.
Drum is worn a bit but not nearly as bad as mine are.

I used to like that in Victoria, B.C., 20 miles and a ferry ride away, my favorite auto parts shop had a brake shop on the side.
Every time i said I was from Salt Spring Island, old Joe (old black joe from all the dust of his work) would give me same day service.

I stood and watched him a couple of times and the first thing that caught my interest, was that he would arc my shoe linings to fit the inside curvature of my drums.

Several years ago I purchased a '48 8N, The sealer had refurbished the brakes. The brakes would lock up. I removed the wheels and drum and everything looked OK. I chamfered the leading edges and sides of the shoes. That did not make any difference. One brake would lock up, but only after sitting overnight. I could get it to unlock by stomping hard on the brake pedal several times. Then for the rest of the day it would work properly. After several weeks the problem went away.

If you can remove the drum fairly easily then I would not think it's too tight of an adjustment although from the looks of the drum frictional surface they have gotten hot. I would think something is holding the shoes applied. Apply and release the brake pedal and see if the shoes respond with the brake pedal.

I replaced the brakes and seals on my 48 8n about 10 yrs ago and they still grab hard the first time I step on them after sitting over night, after that they are fine. I have gotten used to it and I ride the brakes for a few feet on cold startup, I don't complain because they work great and from what I read here most people say n's have lousey brakes, I can lock mine up if I want and turn on a dime locking one wheel. My other 48 8n brakes are not nearly as good and I replaced them and the seals as well the same way so go figure.

My first thought is the drum is going on to far. You have a worn hub it has moved hub/drum assy in the brake shoes are rubbing on the inside edge of the drum.

For the leading edge lubbers blow up the pix what do you see....

If that's the case, can I shim it out with some small washers? How thick should the hub be? Not sure I want to replace it right now.

Nope.

Look at the pic. See how the axle threads extend past the hub? That means the hub and/or the axle are worn out.

Look for scuff marks on the sprigs or backing plate.

You need to make a taper on each end of the brake lining and lightly sand down the rest of the lining surface and inside the drum surface,
then it should work.

Thank you and everyone. I plan to do exactly that. I thought I might as well check the left side's brakes today as well. I cant get any of the lugs to budge, even with a 5 foot cheater. I dont have a torch so I just sprayed them with PB blaster. I hope that helps. Anyone have luck with those little handheld propane torch get them hot enough? I can pick one up if they will work.

Makes me think the previous owner had brake issues with the right side since my air gun spun them right off.
