Need another redneck solution

Every time I gas up the 4010 kawasaki mule, I get fuel on barn floor, never fails.

Does anyone make a gas can that's like a the hose on a gas pump that shuts off when it sees the gas tank is full? I have to use a funnel to put gas in mule and can't see how full the tank is. Many times I know when the tank is full when I see gas running on the floor. Tonight I slipped holding the funnel and yet, gas went on me and the floor, AGAIN!

That's when I thought it would be nice to have a 5 gallon gas can with a hose on it like a gas pump has.

Is there one like that or has any redneck engineer invent one?

I fill my ATV using a five gallon can and siphon hose. Never spill a drop and can see the tank filling up. Just works for me.

Harbor freight has one but I don't know how good it is. I bought a small pump you drop in a can and run the hose to the tank. I use it on my mule and have pumped a couple hundred gals of diesal on a set of AA batteries. I paid 14.00 for it. On another site a landscape company has been using this same pump for several years

One of my new style small gas cans has a spring loaded valve at the end of the spout. Press the spout into the tank to open the valve, lift to close it. I don't remember the brand, but it is very handy for filling push mowers and snow blowers without the need for a funnel.

I commonly fill my lawnmower using a funnel, and never spill any. I don't overfill the funnel, and stop when the gas is at the bottom of the funnel. Just don't get in a hurry.

I brought one a few years ago about the third time I used it when I let up on the can the end shot off into the tank... Its a major job to remove the tank and retrieve it. My uncle gave me a new one a few weeks ago I went ahead and pried the end off

My new exmark mower has a 8 gal are so tank under the seat its a P.I.T.A to add fuel to you know its full when it pukes on the ground... I don't like that deal my old one had saddle tanks on both sides with great big fuel caps you could see the fuel level... My bota tractor also has a small fuel tank inlet/cap :evil: I have read on a bota if you turn the switch on it will make a buz'N noise when its about full I seam to forget about that... :lol:

Since I put fuel in tanks all the time I buy these containers because they do not leak when I put gas in. I usually buy them at a motor cycle shop they are a lot of money but they do work great when you are carrying five gallons of fuel. he is a picture of them. One is the top part that has a flex tube which is easy to put in to the fill. The jug has tow handle spots on it which helps on handling. Maybe you should get one and see how they work. make Shure you buy the top part it is an extra purchase. LC2 jug and the top is a Tuff Jug Flex auto shut off Vented spout.

Look at Northern Tool,others sell them but I know they have pictures online. They look just like an air tank except the hose has a nozzle shut off. Some of the commercial mowers are mounting them on their trailers,they just pull up and it is like a mini gas station.

We bought a new JD zero turn last year and it's a pain to gas up also! I always use a funnel with a screen in it but the mower has a good filter so I suppose I could just pour out of the can. There are some good suggestions here, I will consider them. A pressurized container with a wet nozzle would be nice!

I use this little auto stop funnel. Once gas gets up to the neck of the funnel, it shuts itself off. The little red lever you see in the middle of it is attached to a float. When the tank is full it pops up. You can then lift the funnel up a little bit push the little handle down in the funnel entries. Works great.

A true redneck would rig something up with stuff he has laying around. The only redneck setup I can think of is a drum with fuel in it sitting on a shelf with a hose coming out the bottom to fill the Mule with. I'm not aware of an auto shutoff for a hose running gravity fed fuel though. I fill my gas powered vehicles from a 300 gallon overhead barrel that sits outside. The nozzle is non automatic shutoff but I rarely run a tank over with it.

You can get just the siphon nozzle and pump and use it on your existing gas can(s). Works with most cans. If not, there are adapters that can also be purchased.

As for a "Redneck Solution", try this on for size:

Get yourself a cap for your gas can, drill one hole in the cap just barely large enough to pull some 1/4" fuel hose through, then drill another hole through the cap and mount a tire valve assembly. On the fuel line, add an inline shutoff valve about 6" to 10" from the output end. Using a tire pump, lightly pressurize your gas can, then open the nozzle and the light pressure will push gas through the fuel line and into your tank. If your can is higher than what you're filling, then once the pressure starts the gas flowing, pop the vent cap on your gas can and it will siphon, albeit through a 1/4" hose. If your gas can is below the tank you're filling, you can continue to pump air into your gas can to push the gas out.

PLEASE NOTE!!!!!: This is a Redneck Fix ONLY, as doing this may possibly allow for a buildup of static electricity, which would not serve any good.....other than bragging rights on the Redneck forums. I honestly don't know if there is much chance of static buildup, but figured I best add that part in there. I think as long as there is some way for the can to ground out, that any chance of static buildup would be eliminated. But this also makes me wonder about the siphon nozzle on Amazon - if you set your gas can up higher, would it still be able to shed any static charge safely?

Take a trip over to Lowes or Wally world. Take a look at a "Sure Can". They have dropped the price a little on them. Two sizes that I know of . They are 2.2 and 5 gallon. Pretty slick how they work.

Very interesting funnel. Not sure it would work on the mule because the gas cap is at an angle on the side. The funnel will be at almost 45. That's what makes it difficult to use a funnel. One hand on funnel and one hand on gas can.

I have metal funnels with screens that work well on everything else. I'm surprised at all the carp caught by the screen.

I ordered the complete hose and tank
from ebay. I figured for a few bucks
more, I'll get a can with it.

The mule is EFI and high compression
twin cylinder. There is no knock sensor
or O2 sensor, so I use 91 octane fuel
just to play it safe. The tank holds
close to 5 gallons of gas. I currently
use a 5 gallon gas can filled with 91.
The 5 gallons lasts longer than 10
hours.

I'm may order just the hose if I think I
need it.

Glad someone has invented something I
was thinking about making, saves me
time.

Geo, you could also do it on the cheap and blast the gas from your plastic can into your mule tank. It's easy too! Just stick one end of a hose into your mule, the other end into the gas can. Then, light a match and drop it down the gas can vent. The pressure should easily get the gas as far as the mule!! :shock: :lol:

Fill it outside. Fill it using gas cans smaller than the tank. Try pouring some gas into the funnel, stop, pull the funnel out, look in the tank, put the funnel back in, some more gas, repeat, repeat, repeat until near full. Trailer it to a full service gas station and let them worry about it. Let the wife do all of the above while you stay at home reading the paper.

Walked into a local NAPA store today they had them with the spout
$37.00. I still don't think they will work good on my mower.

Mule holds about 5 gallons. Buy a two gallon gas can. Fill the can, but only fuel the Mule when it gets below half. Then you know the Mule will hold the whole contents of the can. Never stop pouring. Plus, two gallon can is easier to handle while holding your funnel.
