Need help changing D17 camshaft (Gas Engine)

Just found that my camshaft has a broken oil pump drive gear on my gasoline D17 series 3. So I have to change the camshaft. The oil pump gear is perfect (I do wonder how the heck the oil pump gear can be perfect and the cam gear absolutely destroyed? Oh well, anyways...)

My questions are:
1. Where can I get a new camshaft?

2. Do I have to replace the lifters as well?

3. Is this an impossible job with the engine still in the tractor? I know I have to take the radiator off. What else needs to be removed? Any tricks?

4. I would like to buy a shop manual so I know what I"m doing when disassembling and reassembling. What is a good manual to buy?

Thanks in advance!
Keith

nnalert has reground cams with the 14 tooth drive gear.
Yes change the bearing and the lifters.
Use cam lube.
Use high zinc/phosphours motor oil like Valvoline 10w-30 Racing Oil to break in the new cam.
Get both the Allis Chalmers Manual and a I&T Mamual. Good info in both.
Others can answer the rest of your questions since I never did one on a D-17.
Just B"s and C"s.

Last year I replaced my pistons, sleeves, rings and crank bearings in my D17 series 3 gas. I bought an I&T shop manual for it on eBay for not alot of money. You remove the radiator, then support the front of the tractor off the ground by jacking it up at the torque tube, and then remove the entire front steering system. It's a bit complicated, and there is absolutely no way I could have done it without the manual.

Get the manual.

Do I really have to remove the front steering parts? I do not have power steering and I already have removed the oil pan with no problem.

CRS says that you need to pull the engine if changing the cam bushings- to get the rear bushing done, and if changing the camshaft, I"d certainly want to measure the bushings. The answer is in I&T AC-17 service manual.

There's no way I'm changing the cam bearings. I do not have the facility to pull the engine. As long as the cam bearings are there and in good condition I'm going with them.

Not that it matters in this discussion, but its kind of interesting that a series III doesn't have power steering.

I checked the book- to replace the bushings, you need to pull the engine...just replacing the cam, can be done from the front after taking off the front cover and supporting the lifters. VERY IMPORTANT- there was a change in gears- you need the right drive gear, according to how many teeth are on the oil pump. (paragraphs 65-66 in the book) BTW- I had the same issue on a WD- cam gear ground to nothing, oil pump gear was fine. For pulling the engine, all you need is a hanging tree and a wire stretcher. You can measure wear on the front bushing and camshaft before pulling the engine, and decide then.

Here is a trick that is probably not in the shop manual. I am not very familiar with AC but, on many tractors instead of removing the bolster and all the steering, etc. you remove the bolts that hold it onto the frame or engine block one at a time and replace with LONG bolts. Then you can slide it away from the motor by the distance that the bolts are longer.

Hello Keith
#1 I can supply you with all the parts you need you can look them up on my site.
#2 yes i would replace the lifters with the cam. you will also need a front cover gasket and front crank seal.
#3 It is not a bad job and can be done without pulling the engine but you must do a "front split" so you can pull the front pulley off. it also would be nice if you had 6 hands to hold the lifters up when you withdraw the cam. I have cut wood dowels and wedged them in the block to hold them up.
#4 most IT manuals are just a reprint of the original manual I have them for $39 you might find them cheaper on the internet.
That tractor has a Buda engine so hold onto your wallet the parts are pricy.

Keith,
a front split is, you remove the front bolster or the front end of the tractor. if you look at your tractor the front engine pulley is very close to the cast peace that holds the front axle to the tractor. to change the cam you must remove this pulley and the front engine cover to get to the cam.I don't have a D17 here to look at but you need several inches to get the pulley off. it might be possible like someone said to put longer bolts in and separate it just enough to get the pulley off but i would think it would be easier to just remove it you need to use a puller to get the pulley off and you need the room. the first thing you need is a IT manual if you had one it would be a lot clearer.
Thanks Ed
