Need help with 350 utility pto

I got myself into a mess! Older guy called and asked me to fix brakes on his tractor. I thought brakes aren't to bad so I said yes. It is the p t o brake instead . Got it home and started on it. PTO shaft turns when trying to take the nut off of pto shaft, I Can't turn it by hand but when I put a socket on it the shaft turns. I have the pto engaged and it still turns. How to get the nut off to further disassemble it. I think there probably are broken parts inside. Can i rig up a puller and remove the rear cover without taking the nut off of the pto shaft? Probably be lots more questions if I get it apart. I have a I& T shop manual for it. Thanks, Chris The seal was out of the cover when it came here.

A question to ask - are the brake bands worn out or would just adjusting them fix the problem. I changed mine last year but don't recall if there was a problem getting the nut loose.

Can you put a deep well socket on the nut. Turn it with a pipe wrench and hold PTO with another pipe wrench?
