Need Help with my CAV IP

Ok so I tore it down to get the gunk out of it, was a sticky gooey mess - would not pump out injector ports. My question is after I removed the pump head and pump rotor and cleaned them then after I inserted the shaft, added some WD40, and spun it with my hand it would only freewheel about 1/4 turn - I have seen videos where it showed it freewheeling about 2 or more turns ... what is normal? I was thinking of using a brass shotgun brush or a cotton gun brush with bore honing paste to get it to freewheel better ... not sure if this is advisable hence the question. Also should the pistons fall out of the housing ... mine will about 1 out of 5 times I turn it on its side - usually need a bit of a push??
Any advice from you Diesel Experts would be greatly appreciated.

Put it together the way it is or purchase another
head/shaft group. All youre going to do with a wire
brush or lapping compound is blunt the sharp
corners on the edge of the passage ways and
compromise their sealing ability. If there are rust
stains either in the bore or on the shaft, I wouldnt
bother trying to reuse it.

Upon further reflection, I have a slightly better answer for you. You should just scrap it. The resistance youre feeling is a high spot , the shaft is misshapen for whatever reason. When you hit the high spot, there is zero clearance at this point, and hence no lubrication. In short, I think this pump was heading for a seizure at some point. To answer one of your statements, the rotation of the shaft within the head should feel smooth as glass.

If You have CAV questions feel free to give me a call. I am sure I can help you get this worked out. I Average about one of these
pumps a week so I have seen a few. Al 231/757/0064

Did you remove the transfer end cap/blades/liner? That will cause it too. Pump should be COMPLETELY torn down for a thorough cleaning if there's any hope of it working
right again. Thanks to bio diesel I see pumps in that shape each week in for repair..

Just got the IP installed after rebuild by Pumpman and everything is working great! Al said it had buildup from bad fuel and water contamination. I guess premium diesel, stabilizer and water remover are going to be incorporated going forward, in no hurry to shell out another $500.
