hello i have a 1950 8n bought it a few months ago use to run very nice other than carb leaks a lil gas so i parked it beside garage till i got another lil project finished and yesterday i went to pull it in and get ready to fix or replace carb. when i went out to start it it would not stay running unless i held starter button in so i replace the old on/off key switch being it was real sloppy 2 wires and tried again no luck it has been converted to 12 volt by other owner so after trying it noticed the wire to coil from selenoid was very hot and melting so i replaced that with a 12 gauge wire instead of the 16 gauge they had on it still no luck but noticed another wire goin to the lil white porcelain block was now hot and melting so i stopped and was looking for bare wires shorting out or any other thing that didnt look proper found none the lil whit wire goes to coil as well. Does any body know what i should try or replace my first bigger tractor i have always played around with cub cadets and wheel horse i like the 8ns think it will be a great help around here but dont know much about them yet.. thank you

Front or side distributor? Once you know that get JMOR's 12 volt wiring diagram and trace out the wires. If I understand what you wrote you have two wires going to the coil and that is not correct. The resistor is designed to get hot so that in it's self is not a problem.

side distributor. where do i find JMOR's 12volt diagr
If you have a wiring mess you may also have to figure out what coil you actually have. Is it a 12 volt coil that does not need the resistor or do you still have the 6 volt style coil that needs the resistor? I would question that because of the two wires connected to the coil.
