i recently bought a 1947 2n tractor. a put a new 6 volt battery in it but it wont turn fast enough to crank the motor. some one told me that it may be a positive ground but i dont know how to tell and how to make sure it is hooked up right

Yes, 2N's are positive ground. The positive battery cable is attached to the back of the "dashboard." Check your repair manual if you have one handy.

Make sure every connection is as clean and tight as can be. + ground means red cable to the frame, black cable to the starter. Not that the starter cares-

Look at the battery. The positive post is larger & has a POS and/or + beside it. The cable (usually a braided strap) from that post goes to the frame of the tractor, usually a bolt on the battery box. The cable from the negative post goes to the starter.

That being said, positive or negative ground isn't your problem. But, if you change the polarity, make sure you polarize the generator before you re-start the tractor (see tip # 23)

The starter isn't turning fast because of 5 likely reasons:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))
2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)
3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)
4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)
5. A weak/dragging starter.
