What is the transmission doing? If it doesn't shift chances are it's the fluid pump. That is something you could change out.

I would keep the slant 6 and have the transmission rebuilt. I never had the best luck with 318s. My humble opinion. The slant 6 is hard to beat. I've had some good runs with them.
