Need Recommendation for 6V Battery

Time for a new 6 volt battery. I see JD has one for $70+ dollars and TSC has one for about $40.00. I have not had good luck with the last 3 JD batteries I've used (both six and 12 volts) as used in my JD 855 12 volt, Cub Cadet 12 volt, and Jubilee 6 volt. All just lasted 4 years or less. Best 6 volt I have ever use was a Harris which lasted 7 years, but none have outlasted the 12 volt Motorcraft I took out of my son's 98 Mustang when he replaced it after it was 4 years old and it still fires up the 8N conversion. Just wanted to know if any of y'all have used the TSC six volt battery and if you had good luck with it.
TIA Mike OH

I had issues with a TSC battery not having enough CCAs to restart my 8N when it was warm. I replaced it with a battery from AutoZone with about 100 more CCAs. Works great now. This is not a plug for them but a plug for more CCAs. Pay attention to what you are getting.

I have a TSC 6V in my 2N for about 5 years now. Gets the job done when I need it. This battery replaced an 8V that a previous owner put in to get it to crank faster. It's never going to set any records but it always gets the motor going.

Bear in mind that there's only so many battery companies out there so I'm sure that one company is running stock for lots of retailers. I buy based on capabilities not on selling price. I have found anything that's green and yellow to be higher priced.

Any more these days.. if yuo get 3+ years out of a battery.. you are living right.

I've had decent luck with interstate 6v batteries. as all my TSC and other brands die.. I'm switching over one at a time..

This is a sore subject for me - I just attached a link to a post I addressed this to save me some typing. In short - the TSC 6V batteries are CRAP! You will be lucky to get over a year out of them, and even luckier to get them to stand by their warranty IMO.

Hey Sounder - you wouldn't happen to have the part number to that 6V Interstate battery handy would you? That is the way I want to go, but because I live in the big city I pretty much have to order stuff like this.

Thanks.

Dan

I've never had a TSC 6v bat last more than 1 1/2 yrs. I've always suspected my charging system isn't good, but the alt/gen shop says it's good.? I regularly have to charge my battery, but it may not be used enough to keep it charged. I bought my last bat from CNH and I've had to charge it as well. Anyway, good luck on finding a good 6v. Dell recommends JD batteries. I haven't been able to force myself to spend that kinda money on a 6v bat. HTH

I've had pretty good luck with Wal-Marts 6 Volt batteries. I've got one in an 8N that's been cranking it over for five years now.

I brought my last one at Carquest. Got an oversize one that has a lot more CCAs than the normal size one. Drawback is you have to drop it into the battery box sideways to it it through the door, a real PITA.

1VHD I work for a GC.. so we have an IB rack in our shop and we get dealer pricing,. So any time i need one I ask the truck to leave one.. and i pay the bat price ont he invoice tot he owner.

I think the TSC warranty issue may be a per-store thing. I've had no problems returning a 6v bat for warranty.. but then.. I don't buy tsc batteries anymore now that I have access to interstate.. though for a while.. TSC was the only 'show' in town where I could get them... so did what i had to do.

I bought one from a place called Battery Warehouse. It may be a chain for all I know but I've had it in for 3 years now and they just tested it and it tested good so I'm good to go for a while.

If you have a alternator it sounds like yer alt belt is slip'n,,, mite check that,,, if you can push the alt fan you have a belt/pulley problem. Hope you did not fall for the 3/4" X 5/8" universal pulley.

Dunno who makes the Motorcraft BUT I have seen'em go 7 plus years not problem. I would not buy a JD battery if my life depended on it. I am parcel to Interstate BUT I have seen a quality issue with them lately. May-B their quality will git better when they git back to wining races other than the ones they put on.

Just bought a 6 Volt bat.(truck & tractor) from Advance Auto parts store $60. It comes with 1 year free replacement or 30 month prorated. The previous one lasted only 2-1/2 years but was a different mfr(also from same store). I didn"t have the luxury of shopping around being 240 mi from home and needed to park the tractor in the garage and leave for home.

i will say i had good luck with advance..sure hope they dont cost 60 now but been awhile sence i bought one i uselly get 5 to 6yrs out of one walmarts r good too..have them in my 12volt tractors

It's a genny. I think it's the vreg. I put a new 1 on shortly after I got the tractor. Still didn't seem to help. Small charge shows on the ammeter. I'll dig into it deeper this spring before mowing season.

buy the least expensive battery that has the required CCA. Batteries are a funny thing. Ive had expensive batteries go bad in a few years and cheap ones last 10 years. So I never by expensive and it has paid off in the long run
