Need Some Help with my Case 580E Starter

Need a little help. I have a Case 580E Backhoe and believe I to replace the starter motor. My battery reads 12.7 to 14.1 VDC and the solenoid clicks…but no initiation of the starter motor. My backhoe has a diesel engine. Looks like the Starter Assembly is a two part assembly with the top section fitting into and against the fly wheel. The bottom section is the actual motor. I believe it is this motor which has failed, but the top section which contains the solenoid looks old too. Looking inside the motor, the insulation on the internal leads has completely fallen off and the spring loaded brushes are pretty much stuck in place with little spring action. I think it is time to replace the motor…and perhaps the entire assembly. What are your thoughts on replacing just the motor or the entire assembly? And I sure could use some part numbers! Thanks an awful lot for your help! Doug in NJ

Welcome to the forum!
I would bypass the starter relay first to rule it out.
Sometimes starters can be rebuilt for a reasonable price if you know a good shop within range, but I believe the prevailing wisdom is to shell out for a newer gear-reduction drive one.
Someone here might give you a model or number to check out but you'd have to give us machine & engine models, etc.

@WilBury and @Doug Weigle they are already a gear reduction starter from the get go, they are not worth the time to try and replace one part or the other, replace the whole starter, there are several good aftermarket options out there, wilson and lister to name two! with the key held in crank position check for voltage on the small wire going to the starter, should be 12ish volts, also do a voltage drop test between battery positive and big lead on starter with it in the crank position, you should see no more than .5V on that test.also check voltage drop from block to negative battery post, same thing while trying to crank and no more than .5V again. Ground from frame to block is a known failure point on E series and later machines

This was a common problem on Es and early CDC engine skid steers. If the starter will kick in and go when voltage from the main battery wire at the starter is applied to the engagement tab on the solenoid you need to install a relay at the starter, this was common on the early units with the updated starter. I do not remember but think that the early Ks were the first with a start relay. I would not spend the money for a new starter before I performed that test.

I was sorta getting at that too @mEl, Did a ton of them on the 1845Cs and the early K's, the K series had issue with the ground circuit between the battery box and frame, I dont think the E's did, I sorta forgot to put the whole voltage testing in for the trigger wire

Yes CT, battery box ground was an issue on several models that grounded the strap on the battery box, had one that the tractor was dead till you stepped up on the step then all came to life, I never use lock washers on electrical terminals they carry lots of current as when they get hot, they relax and then its loose, This gents starter may be indeed bad but the check I described is definitely the first step. There are lots of starters thrown away unnecessarily.
