Need trick to installing thermostat

53 Jubilee...
Trying to install new thermostat on tractor. After cracking one thermostat housing and a leak with the new one, I was wondering if there was a trick to installing it back on. I am guessing that the thermostat is sliding out of the groove some when I try to place it back on and bolt it down.

Also just want to make sure that the spring side of the thermostat goes inside the motor?

Thanks for any advice.

Sick the thermostat in place with contact (weatherstripping) cement so it can't fall out of place.

The side with the spring and the copper "pellet" faces the engine.
