I have used a JD 510 round baler since the late 80"s. It"s wore out and I am looking to buy a newer model. Don"t like paying the price of newer (used) green paint. So I have been looking at other brands. Around here my only choices are JD, Vermeer, and NH. I"m leaning toward Vermeer. What is the difference between Vermeer REBEL models and say the 605 series balers? I"m planning on buying a baler made, at the least, after the year 2000. And I like all the bells and whistles. Wrap, monitors, gathering wheels, bale kicker, etc.

If you want all the bells and whistles, then forget about the Vermeer Rebel series. That is a cheapened down version of the Vermeer baler meant to compete with some of the other cheap balers. If you want all the bells and whistles, then you should be looking at the "L" or "XL" series Vermeer balers. I believe they have an "M" series baler out now too, if you have alot of money to spend. If you are looking at comparable balers in New Holland, the 644, 654, etc. are about comparable to the Vermeer "L" series. The New Holland 648, 658, etc. are comparable to late model "L" series and early model "XL series. New Holland started the "BR" series about 2003 which is comparable to the Vermeer "XL" series.
I know nothing about John Deere balers so can't give you any comparisons there.

Guess why JD rd balers made after the 410/510 models bring good $$$$$$$??? Because they are good and relatively easy to use and will make a good, tight bale of hay. That is is if the operator knows how to run a rd baler and you should be able to if you've successfully baled hay with a 510.

IMHO later model JD rd balers are light years ahead of the510 series that you have.

If you want Netwrap then a 435/535 is when JD started the option.

I hardly ever see a Vermeer rd bale in the field where I live, they're nearly all green in my area

How important is a pretty bale? If looks are important than JD 530/535. Good solid bales, simple to work on but not many bells and whistles. I looked at the newer JD"s in the field and wouldn"t have one. Tucker wheels on a JD are a joke.
New holland doesn"t build a baler in my opinion square or round. They build bundlers.
Vermeer started the bells and whistles with the J model I believe. Makes a good solid bale not as pretty as the JD but close. Not as simple to work on. Vermeer makes the only true tucker wheels that actually work.
Net wrap was invented for the newer balers to make a bale look acceptable.
What brand do I have? A JD 430 and a Vermeer 604K. I like both.

Not exactly. Netwrap bales sheds rain better than twine bales. Netwrap is approximately 25% faster in baling time. In same time frame a person can bale 100 twine bales or 125 Netwrap bales.

If it's coming a rain and you beat the rain having 25 more bales baled that's very important to me. This also equates to more bale per day.

Faster bales per hr means less high priced diesel burned!!!!!

I think netwrap is easier to remove from bales for feeding than twine if bales can be lifted off the ground. With twine if one is baling a large windrow(which I do by normally raking 27 ft) the starting twine strings get buried under a layer of hay.

And yes if applied correctly netwrap gives the bales eye appeal and SALEABILITY.

I bought a new Vermeer 5410 Rebel baler with bale monitor this last spring. It is very easy to start a bale and makes a tight solid bale.It is the most trouble free thing I own. I would not trade it for any other color baler.
