New Forum Format

This new layout is looking great! Thanks YT Support for getting us here. I am sure a lot of folks are going to be a bit confused and will need some tutoring along the way. Since I do most of my posting and viewing from an iPhone I see there are some items I have some questions about. I am sure this will all be up and in use as it was before.
Thanks again “YT Support!” Yea I can use quotations and they show up o more of ..this..
You're kidding, right??? This is a waste and unable; to navigate. GO BACK TO ORIGINAL FORMAT PLEASE otherwise I'm outta here for good. Why

Go up above to where your handle shows and click on it, that is your profile. On the drop down list click on peferences. Go down the list to "Avatar Display" and check the box where it says "Hide avatars when viewing posts". You can then go back to the forums and see it that looks better to you. You should only see the poster's handle and posting status. You may need to refresh your screen to get it to swap to your new choice.
I did that. Nothing changed.

Also, there used to be an icon on each thread, and clicking that icon would take me directly to the replies that I have not seen yet. That icon is missing, and I have to scroll through the entire thread just to see what is new.

If the thread title is in bold print, clicking on the thread title should take you to the first unread post. Does for me.

Like everything new, it takes some getting used to. I do not claim to be proficient, but I think I'm gaining.

When the Garage Journal forum reformatted a few years ago, they had a bunch of members threatening to leave if they didn't change it back to the old format. They didn't change it back. I guess they lost some members. They also have more now than when the change happened. The forum owners and administrators would have shut it down rather than go back to the incredibly difficult to maintain format. Simple as that. I feel sorry for the members here that are having such a hard time with this. Hopefully they can adapt and continue to contribute to this amazing resource. It'll be a shame to lose them. I stand behind the owners and administrators who maintain this place for all members' enjoyment. It's not like they changed the format to upset everyone. They did it because they had to.

Hey Factotum, I don't recall seeing that handle on Garage Journal, may have missed it but maybe you use a different one there, I do.

I remember the same kind of reactions there when they upgraded too.

If you click on the reply button located at the lower right of a text box you want to reply to, the reply you make will drop in right below the post you are replying to (as I have done in your post), even if there are already more posts below the one you are replying to. If you drop down below the post you want to reply to, you will see another text box with your avatar or name in the box to the left of it and type a post; the reply on that box will go to the bottom of the posts to that thread.

You can get rid of the avatars by going to your preferences and checking the Hide avatars box.
I'm sorry but I don't see another text box with my avatar anywhere below this reply

I'm using my phone but I don't have a lower text box. The next previous reply is below the reply I want to reply to.
I am on my computer and overlooked the possible differences in what the devices look like, I apologize for that.

When I looked on my phone that other text box is at the end of the thread, so it is not visible like it is on the computer. You are correct you only see the one when you click on Reply in a post box to type a reply to someone. The only time you might see the second box is if you are replying to the post at the end of a thread.

Hey Brown David! I hope you have a nice David Brown.:giggle: A buddy of mine recently sold a 990. I'm 4x4Pete on the GJ forum. I'm new here, I only recently got involved with old tractors. I have a little (and I mean little)1984 Kubota b5100e 2cyl diesel that I semi restored and enjoy. I use it for cutting grass it's awesome on diesel and has all the workings of a larger tractor. 3ph, 2 speed rear pto, two range 3 spd trans and a front electric pto. The problem is it isn't heavy enough to plow with. That's what got me interested in the old iron. I find the changes have made this forum easier to use, less 1990 more 2020. :)

Okay, I recognize that handle. I'm Bad Eye Bill over there.

No DB's here, Brown David's just an inside joke with a couple of my buddies.

My tractors are a Ferguson 2085, a Massey -Harris 50, (my avatar pic), and a Massey-Harris-Ferguson Work Bull 202 with a backhoe.

The first reply is never indented because it's technically a reply to the thread just like a chronological forum or view. Replies to any of those first level posts indent. Unfortunately, they stop at 5 levels in because phones can't handle it. A change I'll be working on is to be able know if the persons on a phone and stop it only for phones, so the indents can continue for desktops with lots of screen space. It needs to keep indenting to be really like classic view.

But that first level is always the same as the original post. Doesn't have to be that way and we could change it if that's too confusing. That makes the phone issue worse though so that has to be figured out first.

I'm quite familiar with this format from other forums I frequent so no big deal.
What about the pages tho?
All the other sites I go to have pages. As the replies add on they have page 1,2,3 etc.
Will we get that here?
Here we're getting ONE enormously long page of replys.
Much easier if they are paginated.

I noticed if I turn my phone sideways it will show a wide view with those page numbers at the top. If turned vertical "normal phone view" it just shows previous and next towards the bottom for the pages. It may be something they can incorporate like some other sites for a mobile version verses more of a desktop version.

The more I use it the more I see that they took a "best of both worlds" approach.

If you notice, my response is indented below yours, indicating that it is in reply to your post, just like Classic View.

Well, it should be at least.
I think to get the indent... one needs to click the tiny reply button within the box of text of the person to whom you are responding.
If you use the large reply box, then I think it acts like a reply to the original post. [I THINK.]

That is right. Chris did say something at one time about the first reply to a specific post doesn't indent however subsequent ones will, up to 5 or 6 then it starts over so the posts don't run off the screen. Using the reply button in a post text box will also show the quote to help ID who the reply is to (provided one does not turn Quotes off in their preferences).
