New fuel filter assembly

Take it apart and lube orings? I don't think I did last time I installed complete assembly and it had a weep that didn't show up right away.

I tried new filter and seals and it leaked terrible. Then when I snugged it up once too much the glass bowl shattered. Never had an issue with the old one sealing, it had an aluminum bowl. I make sure the recess for seal was clean. Wondering if the machining is sub par. The glass bowl lip was pretty rough. Does it just need minimal tightening?
 
Is this a replacement filter assembly directly replacing a stock part? Asking because wanting to know if the filter was made to accept the pressure that it is being put under. I can find that filter assembly on eBay for $28.50, it would be no surprise that it is “foreign sourced” the questionable quality seems to come into play on about any tractor part you get these days.

Far as I know it's the same. Dealer no longer available. Not under pressure-gravity fed from tank. It's for a Ford 3600 but this assembly is common in many other makes and models.
 
If you do a little searching online, this entire filter and housing is available relatively cheap. Good or bad, depending on your point of view, the replacement bottom cap is made of metal. As you surmise, this setup must have been used on over 100 different applications.
 
I just went through this. I disconnected the fuel line between the tank and the assembly. Not wanting to strip any threads in the aluminum assembly, I tightened the connector at the filter assembly good and tight but not too tight. In short the filter appeared to be leaking at the seals. I tightened things up on the assembly filter screw that holds the bottom cap up against the filter....did it several times......by then the filter Orings were pretty tight. Went through a lot of head scratching as it kept leaking and it appeared to be at the top seal. Inspection proved nothing.

Bought another assembly. Installed it and leaking again. In short, the rigid tube between the tank and filter assy was leaking at the filter assy. Since I had 2 new assy's leaking, I figured the problem was elsewhere. I got on the inlet fuel line nut and tightened it a little more each time, noticing a reduction in the leaking, (aha making progress) and finally got the leak stopped.

Moral of the story........had I tightened the tubing connector to the assembly bracket adequately in the first place, the extra cost and lots of frustration would have been avoided......but I am skeptical about overtightening aluminum connections....how much is too much?

So is the issue that you question the instrution to take apart and lube the o rings as your question mark implies? You said you did not do that and had a leak. There's your sign. Many o rings bnefit from a bit of lubs upon assembly. The manufacturer may not prelube the ones in your assembly as they have no way to know how many years (or decades) the thing will sit on a warehouse shelf.
 
New assembly on and not leaking.
I'm certain the problem was the groove on the filter base was too small.
Having it off the tractor and facing up, the flat oring was too big and both bulged and twisted if you forced it in. I tried it with a few different new and used o rings I had.
They all sat in the new groove perfectly.
