Recently purchased a 1410D and the fuel that was in the tank was red(ish), I assume thats "farm" dye. Just filled up my diesel can but it was green(ish). My question is will the bio-diesels and newer, cleaner diesels harm our "old" engines?

Anything that you can buy from the gas station will be fine. I have read some post about bio diesel causing problems but that could be because they did not make it right.

I can't get clear recommendations from engine or fuel authorities on this, and I'm not familiar with green diesel, but this might help.

Sulphur is to a small extent an engine lubricant, yours was made for high-sulphur fuel, and today's diesel has virtually none. So unless your fuel supplier assures you that a lubricant is added, you might look for an additive with this property. (If your weather gets really cold you could look for anti-gelling properties too. And if it will be sitting for many months, a biocide would be good.)

In most jurisdictions you can get road-tax-free diesel (died red so you don't use it in your truck). Those with off-road machinery know where to get it, so you might have to ask around. That would be my recommendation.

With biodiesel, I think you'd be OK at least in warmer weather if it's from a commercial source. The engine itself would be fine with even home-made bio, but there's been talk about its potential to clog filters and injectors.

Hope you enjoy your yannie.

Any diesel that you can buy from a pump in Ga. will be fine. If they are selling it out of the woods in glass jars, I would be a little concerned.

Billy, Where are you located in S. Georgia? I am in Irwinton which is about 35 mi. North of Dublin. I have been using diesel with the dye in it for years. It is dyed because the State does not charge $.075 per gallon road use tax on it. You can use greern diesel, but it is for trucks and cars on the highway and the tax is included in the price. Don't be caught on the highway in a truck that has red dye in the fuel.

Jess,

In Valdosta. Just about as south as you can get and still be in GA. Thanks for the input, know about the dye but cant say that I've seen the almost neon green stuff before and I owned a diesel car for some time. My tractor seem to like it so far...

I'm just east of Athens with one of my customers Has 38 acres.I use my yannie for grooming 10 and a 50Hp JD to brush cut 20. Hers being only 5yrs old and not only haveing mine for about a yr. Not knowing for sure about using off road diesel I was alittle leary about using it.I've known about it but if it was cheader there's a reason and if it's just differen't for road taxes great that will add up over the season. Thanks again guys for the info. <E>:)</E>
