New Holland Double Rake Hitch

I had a NH double hay rake hitch given to me and nears as I can figure its easy to rake two single windrows but to make a double windrow, do
you need a left and a right hand rake? This hitch is the older style with adjustable pipe settings either left or right off a two wheel
straight hitch. I currently have 2 left hand dolly wheel rakes and figure I need to modify one hitch with longer draw bar to get one rake
ahead of the other. Would a rake with no dolly wheel create enough of a offset to let second rake with longer dolly wheel hitch pick up first
single windrow? Any one with additional knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

They are two styles of tandem rake hitches. It sounds like your is the straight hitch. (pic.#1) To rake double windrows with it you need a left and right rake. The better rake hitch is more of a gooseneck hitch.(pic. #2) The rear axle is steerable, either manually or hydraulic. These are the two NH hitches I know of.

There is another type that I do not think NH ever made. It is a "J" shaped hitch with wheels at the ends of the "J". (pic. # 3) You use it with two rakes that are the same pitch. If you want doubled windrows you hook the one rake to where it rakes in front of the trailing rake. If you want single windrows you hook the front rake further to the right so its windrow is beside the trailing rake not in front of it. They are not hard to make. Just spindles and tubing. You could just modify your current hitch and make it do the same thing.

I have a double rake 'hitch',of the gooseneck type. It pulls two left rakes. Just set the overlap to make one double windrow.A hydraulic 'cylinder' steers it. Once you are done rakeing, just pull the (hydraulic) lever to swing it narrow to go down the road. There are pics here on YT. Maybe someone can find and post pics.

mtny The bottom hitch can be flipped over BUT you have to unbolt and flip the front gauge wheel as it is a crazy wheel. Look in the picture real close and you can see how it is mounted.

RickB New Holland made that style much later than the other two. 15 years ago the local NH dealer would have a half a dozen on his lot each spring. HE had a "Deal" where he would sell you a new bar rake and the hitch to go with the rake you owned. HE would carry the loan for a lean on you New Holland rake you already owned. So for no money down you had a double rake hitch setup. He sold tons of rakes doing this.

We misunderstood each other. I?ve seen, assembled and delivered the bridge hitches. There?s quite a few of the J shaped hitches around.. The one I haven?t seen is the straight bar hitch that offsets one rake to each side of center but the same distance from the tractor.

They sold the straight hitch before the bridge hitch there are several around here and the only bad thing about them is you have to unhook both rakes and then rehitch them and inreally heavy hay they will make a gob of hay because the hay is so thick it gets stuck between the two rakes
