New Hytran?

Had my hytran barrell filled last month, didn't use any out of it until today. Stuff is dark, smells different and seems to be thicker. Its been a year maybe two since I have had the barrell filled, did they change it recently? I am not worried about my 66 and 86 IH's, they arent fussy, but I don't wan't to mess up something in our old cases. We have a 970, 1370, and two 4890's. Anyone noticed a diffrence with the new oil or if it affects shifting? It seems thicker, I would think it would affect shifting especially this winter. What Mobil oil would be similar to the original hytran? Thanks for any information.

CNH recently changed suppliers of there oils/ antifreeze and such. It now is supplied by Shell. You are right about the smell. Your dealer more then likely filled your barrel with the new UTH oil CNH offers. You can still get the Hy-Tran formula oil which I believe its called Hy-Tran premium grade oil now. Its seem CNH dealers are pushing the UTH oil for some reason. If you want I use Mobil oil you need Mobil 424 oil.

I called my CASE IH dealer a few years a go when they changed HY-tran and made it thicker for the new transmissions to verify the new formula would work with the older 70 and 90 series tractors. They gave me a number for the company that made the oil and I had a long talk with one of their Product developers and was assured it was an Improved version of HY-tran.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM; If case IH has a new supplier and the NEW oil is not formulated to work with the older 70 and 90 series tractors; it could be a major problem.

Several years ago I purchased a Very Nice 1370 Case and made the mistake of using oil (Marathon 577) my local fuel supplier said was the same as HY Tran.

It was not the same; The detergents and ZINC formulation in the Marathon 577 literally eat the glue out from underneath every fiber disk in the tractor.

I ALL but Ruined a Cherry 1370.

Unless you like splitting tractors and spending thousands on repair bills .......

My advise is call your CASE IH dealer and demand to talk to the new company formulating the oil and make absolutly certain it will not ruin your older tractors.

Thanks for the reply, this is what concerns me also. I don't know a lot about the powershifts on these cases, we have never been into one, we just use them for haying and pto work, but I have read the ps clutches are sensitive to some oils. I havent used any of this new oil in the cases and will have to see if they have the old style available, which I doubt. I am leaning towards switching to Mobil 424, which is what I believe my Uncle use to use for years in his 70 series cases and had no issues, well atleast not related to oil. I have always run Mobil engine oils with no issues, but I have no interest in using shell oils.

The debate over what oils to use where has been going on for decades and probably will continue. What I have seen as far as linings coming on disc in Case tractors and when I mention that I am talking about very late 70 series and the 90 series. The linings started falling off 90 series decades ago, even when Case was Case and their TFD2 oil was used. That much I know. Lining material was changed and it was said a water based adhesive was used, that I can not confirm. Anyway over the years with moisture entering the systems it was said that is what caused those lining to loosen. Once again I can not confirm that but it kinda makes sense, especially where Case approved lubes were used. I have serviced these tractors for 50 years now and have seen many different oils used and for the most part name brand oils seem to work fine if they are approved. I honestly can not say I have seen a oil related failure. Lack of routine maintenance and operator error along with normal wear are the causes that have kept me busy through the years. At the dealership we sold Cenex Quicklift oil because that gave us a extended warranty on our equipment, never did we put in a claim. I do not know if they sell it under that name yet, Rod.

Just switched the bulk barrel to Cenex Quicklift HTB this spring. It meets the latest CNH MAT specs for the cvt tranny in the newest horse as well as the specs for the older Hytran oils.

Bonus was the cost was 30% less than the CNH brand and Cenex came out to fill the barrel.

I ran Mobil 424 for several years in a Case 2590 without issue. Unfortunately, the 424 doesn't meet the specs for the cvt.
