Hi All I was looking at an older new idea ground drive spreader like a 14a. I was wondering on with the apron speed is it only 1 speed or does the lever to enagage the apron chain have different notches which are different rates of feed for the apron chain. If it is only single speed do any of the older ground speed spreaders have more than 1 speed for the apron chain or is it only determined by how fast you go. Thanks

A New Idea 14A spreader has a multi speed apron.

Yes, several speeds. I always spread on the first and slowest notch then drop down when almost empty to clean out. You don’t want to break the drag chain. Slow and easy wins that race.

Ground driven spreader’s are fine if ground conditions support traction . But if like spring in northeast Ohio silt loam is like grease , heavy load , you’ll slip and slide . Put brackets on the side to carry a pitch fork , you’ll need it. Tip

Thanks my ground drains pretty good I was more concerned with the amount spread in a pass. Obviously a pto spreader has more flexibility with volume since you can slow down the tractor.
