New Idea #4 Hayrake

I am trying to make a rake that has been sitting in the weeds forever work again. I have lubed and oiled this animal to death. When I engage the gears the rake only turns about half a turn and the whole thing locks up. Is there a brake on this old wheel driver animal or a lever I am missing. everything seems loose and not seized up that I can see. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Make SURE a tooth isn't bent, OR oversized in length. I had both happen on rakes I had. The teeth bent stopping the rake. I bought new teeth, but they were a couple inches longer. They got caught on the center shaft, and stopped the rake.

Am in the prosess of rebuilding 3 of those right now and over the last 2 years I have rebuilt over a dozen rakes a year of all makes plus several the prior years. You think the real is loose as it will turn partway and stop but it is not. You have a bearing stuck on the bar. This is normal fior a rake that has set outside and not used or greased. Try each bearing to see if they move freely, you may find some the do but also some that don't, the ones that don't remove the bearing clamp on both sides of the bearing and first tooth on both sides so you can slide the grease retainer to side and you can get to the bearing with a 2# hammer and beat on it possibly first one side then the other and eventually it should start to slide. Clean good with a wire brush on both sides and as you get it to move clean and move it back the way it first was and keep repeating. In completely rebuilding I have to take the bars completely out anyway so that is what I do. All 16 bearings on some are rusted sollid to the bars and will probably have to rebuild bars as for them being rusted out. I have converted the 3 bar New Idea to 4 bar using a spare reel I had on hand, easy conversuion These rakes will be painted up when I get done with them 2 of them belong to a dealer now while the 3rd is mine but he will get it as well when done and all will be resold for use. This Dealer has in past couple of weeks just sold at last count at least 7 steel wheel hay rakes and he is paying around $600 for each working rake to put on his lot for resale.

No gearbox, all open gears. And I can get just about any parts for that rake that is needed. Teeth are $2.25 each.

If you have the lot number I can tell you what year it was made and if early or late in year.

Leroy are you able to get parts for the New Idea #4?? The gear on mine broke into two pieces yesterday. It looks like a lovejoy gear, and it slides between the two gears making it go from raking to tedding. Are you able to find them?? Thanks in advance. Gene . my email is [email protected]
