New Idea #61 shredder

I have bought a New Idea #61 shredder. It looks to be in good shape. The PTO and it's harness is in the shed so that is why it is not in the picture. The serial number on the tag is #3378, Lot S-6. My dad remembers when the local implement dealer would rent these out years ago. I won't be using this on too many acres-just a good "throw back" machine for corn picking days. I did buy an operator manual for it off of ebay. I am planning on cleaning this up, prime it, and then paint it. I was wondering what information people can offer about this machine....when were they made? how many did they make? good things/bad things?

Next model newer than mine. Mine is a No. 60 and I liked the work they did. Hasn't been used for years as no longer farming and at the end I had to get a different unit as these New Ideas will only work on 36" minimum row width and better on a 40" row width. Will not go between the rows on outside in 30". Had it since I think late 50"s, just too long to remember. Do remember the folks renter a rotary mower type to chop the corn stalks and did not like the work it did and dealer had this used outfit and said try it and it was bought.

Should have added you DO NOT want a stay green stalk, it needs to be dead and dry for them to work.

No. 61 shreader lot S 6 was built in 1954 and was the second of 4 lots built that year. Lots S1, S2 that mine happens to be from and is seriall 00389 and lot S3 are from 1953 and lots S4 & S5 are Model 60 from the first half on the54 model year, starting with lot S6 thru S14 built in 1947 were No. 61 shreaders. Then Lots S15 & S 16 were built in 1958 as the No. 451 shreader with lots S17 & S18 the last year of production in 1959. I do have the parts manual for the 60, 61 & 451 and the operators manual for the 60. Before this time they did make anouther model but I do not know the number but it had only 2 beater shafts instead of the 3 that these have and the wheels instead of setting on the sides of the unit they were in back.

Leroy, Thank you for all of the information. I did buy the sales pamphlet for the No. 61 Shredder but didn't know all about the years they were built. Have you ever seen the 3pt hitch version of the shredder? The operator's manual I have for the #61 has a printing date of 8-57. Did these have lettering and numbering on the sides of the hood as depicted on the operators manual?

Hello, I’m 12 years late to the thread but I’m still gonna ask. Do you have anymore pictures of this machine to provide? I’m working on building a miniature version and am trying to collect as many pictures as a I can.

Ken....busy spring haven't been on since winter, softball coach. Here are pictures of another chopper I have. The last photo has the option rear hitch bracket on it. Also, they made a 3pt version of this model but I have never found one. Keep asking me questions!! If you do make a toy version, I would love to see pictures of it!!!

Hello! I did end up making a 1/64 version. This is modeled after the 451 actually and I don’t think it’s even finished, needs orange rims and an attachable and detachable rear hitch yet. This would be the newest, last model of this style of shredder. I have a lot of different toys on the go but building an orange 60 and 61 is on the list of things to do! Thanks for the pictures. And as of a 3 point version I am also going to make one of those, I have a signature 1/64 “3 point hitch” attaching style that hooks around the back axles of the small tractors. I have not found a green one, just the orange ones, I have own three of them now. The 3 pt model is something I don't think I will see outside of the brochures. Keep me/us updated on the other toy models you make!!

I make my toys from scratch out of tin cans and paper clips, no joke lol, and I get the tires from ertl wagons and stuff that I don’t use but I am running low so I’ll need to order some online. I’ll have to post some pictures of all my other toys soon, I am working on a full line of gehl equipment they made in the mid 60s, like the pull type and self propelled chop king, once I am finished with them I’d like to recreate the old promotional film Gehl made when they introduced them, in stop motion.
