New Idea picker

Have any of you guys ever narrowed down a wide row picker down to 30” rows? If you have how big of a project is it?

The mechanic/blacksmith,he was pretty handy, about 25 miles from my place, narrowed up a Massey Ferguson corn chopper, but that's about all i know of it!

I don’t know, but I think that would be a pretty big job. The elevator taking corn up from the snappers to the husker bed would need to be narrowed as well, that’s a big deal in my book.

Couple thoughts -

It can be done because i worked for a guy who had one that had been narrowed up. I can't tell you how much work it is, but on his, you could see where it had been cut to narrow it. But you're still gonna have a head that doesn't have stripper plates.

Check out Geiger farm on Youtube. He heavily modified one and posts videos every year of harvesting his corn. Basically, he took the husker unit off and mounted it on a chopper frame that he had stripped all the chopping components off Then he mounted a Massey head on that. He said it took a bit of work to drive everything. He claims he can pick at over 5mph with his hybrid picker.

Likely, given enough time and money, it could be done. The bigger question is"Why would you?" For what it would cost in time and dollars one could undoubtedly buy a "peach" of a 325 New Idea picker(that is the narrow row version) and have it trucked from anywhere in the country. Yes, these pickers are starting to get a bit scarce, but there are still literally hundreds of them scattered around. The only reason I can think of to convert one is to be able to say " I did it".
