New manifold difference

Putting on new manifold yesterday - (9N-9425), after replacing manifold studs. Stripped brass nuts trying to get them threaded on end of studs because I could not get much of the nut started on the thread. I thought perhaps the studs were shorter, so I took one out (fouled it up in process, fortunately bought extra), but it was same length as old ones.

This morning it dawned on me to compare old manifold with new one and sure enough the new manifold is 1/7 - 3/16" wider where the nuts attach, hence why I can't get nuts to attach to studs - there just isn't enough stud thread exposed.

Anyone else seen this? I bought manifold from regular parts place we all know, but was several months ago. Should I try to find longer manifold studs, or not put them in as far? What about leaving brass locknuts off? Grind mounting area down - probably impossible...

it from china, yes most of the one i had replace are like that they can be a bit hard
manifold install:
put gasket on
put manifold on then pull manifold away from motor where thread just stick out. just plently of room to start the nut. you might have to have 3 or 4 hand doing this as soon get nut started start tighting it up from center to the outward and once you have it there you want to put lock washer on one at time then tor them down.hope this help

John, you lost me on this. Are you saying to put center nut on before lock washer, then put lock washer on first stud then nut? I still don't think there are enough threads exposed.

Thanks

It shouldn't be too tough to find longer studs, and the $$ shouldn't be TOO much.

Just an added cost to cheap parts from "the land of almost right".

Just type in studs in the box on the left side of the page that pops up once you click the link below.

This is what happens when we buy all of this Chinese junk.

Next time ask where this part is made before you make the purchase.
Dennis Carpenter makes good parts from what I have seen and a lot of them are NOS.

BTW the manifolds are on page 36 of the PDF.

Welcome to my world of frustration that I frequently get ribbed on. Most can't understand why I get so worked up over something that just needs longer studs - but it is discovering this AFTER I purchased the item and am trying to get my tractor back up and running. Now you will need to remove those studs, and even have a high risk that at least one of those studs you have to remove will shear off requiring you to drill it out, and put in longer ones... Sure - you are only out a couple of bucks - how about the trip or postage to get these studs, time wasted having to remove the old ones, and getting everything back together. All of this from an item that is sold and marketed as a "direct bolt-on replacement for the factory OEM part"!

If you ever have to replace the head with an aftermarket one - prepare yourself to use longer bolts/studs as well...

NAPA and most auto parts places will have an assortment of standard studs and brass nuts. Just another trip to town.
Lots of Luck Joe

I will try and find longer studs, perhaps locally if I can to save some time.

By the way, this manifold was not made in China. At least it was advertised and sold that way, nor is it marked that way on the manifold.

I agree 100% about getting the best quality parts you can and from USA if possible, but I've found out that made in China or USA does not guarantee anything. Case in point: I purchased a new, made in USA radiator - OEM style "just like original" BS that was "the highest quality available" from one of the names always mentioned on this board. The radiator came, and the frame was heavily rusted, and paint flaking off. Yes it was wrapped and not housed in moisture. I sent it back disgusted.. They sent a second one. Guess what? It was worse than the first one. The paint literally flaked off as I took it out of packaging. I gave up and just sanded the #$% thing down and painted it myself. Get the best you can, yes, but please don't tell me just by virtue of being made and sold over here is a guarantee of quality. I got other PITA stories like this but I'll save 'em for another time.

Good thang you are not in the repair business,,, You have to B your own quality control inspector on every part,,, you would not believe some of the stuff i see,,, USA made it don't matter.

Far as tractor parts I am happy to git them at enny price even if i have to rub on it. The manifolds have went down hill,,, low bidder got the contract. Tisco use to have the best but even they have done us a favor and went to the piece of sheet cheap ones to keep the price down. I don't think one can b found made in the USA WHY folks will not pay the difference,,, Folks have got what they want,,, CHEAP. Would B interesting to know if the DC manifold is the one that Tisco use to sell,,, if so I would go that rt,,, they did fit nice.

Their is no such thang as good and cheap enny more,,, if I am going cheap i will take the cheap cheap one,,, thats what happen to the manifolds the cheap cheap out sold the good and cheap,,, rant all you want bean counters look at the bottom line,,,, most would not know a tractor if they seen one. I put a water pump on a truck a few weeks ago it had the original pump,,, new'n rite out of the box the impeller and fan hub were not installed to spec. I want to thrilled about that but did do my thang to it,,, no charge of course. Ordered 3 all different,,, must B a drug thang that none were in spec.

I just have to lay the blame in a somewhat different direction. TISCO was bought out by Woods and since that time TISCO is rapidly and heavily going to Chinese junk. Look at the manifold prices, they sell the cheap one from China for the same price as the good previous one. The customer dosen't get a choice, Woods is simply out to maximize profits!
Yes I and many other customers would pay a little more for a better product, Woods (TISCO)and others suppliers need to give us a chance to buy American!

Yep some of the new replacement manifolds need longer studs. I have one here that the studs need to be about 1/2 inch long to be able to put it in but it also looks like it would work better and less likely to brake/rust out then the old ones

Dukester,
I know your frustration all too well. I too bought a manifold made in upside down USA. Actually it was stamped upside down on the manifold. And the radiator you bought, wasn't Clancy by chance? I just took my second tractors radiator out and brought it to the car wash. Almost all the paint came off with just light water pressure. I just bought a radiator from TSC made in Turkey and it is high quality. But I paid $239.00 for that thing. Our country is indeed in bad shape and we are hostages to the overseas manufacturers. And now China is trying to cripple our children, our future generation with lead poisoning. As for your manifold. The thing is thicker because of someone not putting enough casting sand in the mold. I had to grind and port mine with a die grinder and side grinder to make it right. Hope I don't have to buy too many more like this.

My last Tisco manifold said "Made in Tiawan" and looked like a 7 year old with an andle grinder cleaned the slag off while on a sugar buzz (click on the link below to my original post on these manifolds). Must have bought the Tisco heads from the same company, as my Tisco head I also purchased at the same time came in an identical box as the manifold. I have no problem with foreign made parts. My rant was for parts that claim to be a direct replacement and is not.

Had to go to 2 different car parts places this afternoon, but finally came up with a set of longer studs, hardened steel no less. Had to settle for coarse threaded on both sides, and nuts to fit. Manifold on, and all is golden, well, brass anyway...

On to the oil & fuel lines.
