New old guy needs help 300U knock (update)

Using the screwdriver listening method there is no doubt now that the knock is coming directly behind the clutch area. The live PTO was mentioned before as a maybe problem and with the use I've been giving it I could believe it. So my question now is will I have to split the tractor to get into this area or may I be able to get to it through the top cover?

Ah by the time your done GETTING to the problem you will have it toren down to the running gears of a Kattydid. along with a few bruised knuckles and smashed fingers.. Let the fun begin . and you will find more then what you want along the way.

Correct, no way to get at it without at least one split. You can get to the front of the TA and the IPTO drive gear with just a bell housing split. If nothing obvious there you have to go deeper.

Once in a while you get lucky and bolt that holds PTO gear backed out of lower PTO shaft and causes noise like that. Can check by draining oil and removing pipe plug from front of center housing up in clutch compartment and removing the plate below the PTO driven gear. Provided it has IPTO. Does it have a T/A? Lots of other parts to fail but thought I would mention since it happens.

come on now don't be spoiling my fun!!! I bought a clutch for this 15 years ago looks like I'll be getting around to changing it and all those leaky seals!

Well for certain I will check that first if it's that easy to see, Thanks! Oh and yes it has IPTO and T/A.
