New SW replies to old posts

Hello YT support hope you are having or had a Merry
Christmas and holiday season. Thank you so much for
the support you have given these forums! I can only
hope that your job is about to become much easier. No
longer will you have to try to get an archaic system to
cooperate with a more modern version.
Now to the subject of this post. What will be the
approach for this going forward? In general this is a
way many new members find their way here, however
as you probably know it is a little clumsy for them
mainly due to the current two view system. I assume
when they log in there will be some notification to the
new poster of the possibility of it being an older
conversation and the response may be limited due to
changes in members activities status?

Initially, I had it set up to lock posts older than Jan 01 2023. Then some volunteers tried it out and reported that it was wasteful for people with the same question to have to start over (that is a paraphrase). Then the solution that partially gave the person an answer can be embellished further. I changed it so on the next load before going live, it will not lock old posts but allow them to be bumped.

It's a balancing act of course since I know across the net, there are many people who become livid with an old post coming to the forefront again. To me, I don't really like that because some new people just pick out a post to try and find a person posting in that thread for a different reason (e.g., ask that person a different question, YT is a community and new users should ask the community), a forum shouldn't be a yellow pages. But, I was being stodgy and we'll unlock them since there is, the majority of the time, a valid reason to expand the old post.

From a use standpoint, the only thing that will separate the old post from the new (aside from the date), is that any post made before Thursday at 2:00pm Pacific, will not be threaded, since no classic view threading information could be copied to the new system. So all will be chronologically ordered like modern view is. Threading immediately starts with new posts including new posts to the old thread.

Okay thank you for that information! One thing which
..soured.. me on allowing old topics to be revived was
the fact that when that type of post came up the
disconnect between Modern and Classic left replies
scattered throughout Classic, some of which never
made it back to Modern. If the new software keeps it
all together it will not be so bad. Another forum I have
been on about a year does not lock their old post
either. However, when you view a post that is older not
sure of the time frame it will have a ..banner.. at the
end warning about the post being older and response
may be limited. One thing that aggravates this on that
forum is at the end of the discussion on a subject it
places old posts there with similar subject discussions.
So I learned quickly to watch dates on discussion
topics there or I would be adding replies to old posts.

jmo, but the "similar topics" many forums use is just a waste of time. it's the most rudimentary of AI, which often groups threads together and only it can understand why.

Yes, I've noticed that myself, though sometimes it hits it right on. That's how I noticed your reply here since I was replying to another thread about the new forums.

I don't know much about it yet, but this uses Elasticsearch to develop it's recommendations.

Thanks HFJ, we had a good team on this and it was smoother than I would have thought possible. We still have to see how it goes for people though. Change is very difficult, an old meme, "too many icons" comes to mind. I have that problem with phones.

Yes, so the bow doesn't turn into a dive, since we know the orchestra pit has no water nor lifeguard.
