New to me 8N

Hello... newbie in the crowd...

We moved onto a small acreage about 3 yrs ago(14 acres) and Im slowly trying to gather all the gear to look after the place, have a couple Ford LGT garden tractors and an IH Lo-Boy 154, and today this Ford 8N from auction for under $1000, supposedly runs and drives but havent seen that yet myself, plan is to use it with a rear rough cut mower along the roadside and larger areas away from the house where the garden tractor doesnt work so well or just takes to long.

Got my work cut out for me gettin it into shape but thats all part of the fun, I pretty much grew up with wrench in hand in the back of Pops Cockshutt dealership in the early 70s.

Always been a Ford truck fan and a Ford N has been on the wish list awhile now... lookin forward to a new adventure.

Congrats on the new tractor.

And welcome to the forum.

Hope you won't be too disappointed to learn that the picture you posted is a 2N or a 9N.

Check out tip # 71 at the link for the serial number location, then John Smith's website for for specific info:

Also, tip # 39 will help you w/ the manuals you will need.

If it does not have an ORC (tip # 18) you will need one w/ a bush hog.

Welcome to the forum!
I agree with Bruce, it looks to be a 2N. Nothing wrong with that
at all, just some parts are different so you will want to know when
ordering, fixing, asking questions etc.
I like the three speed transmission myself.
Looks like you live in a colder climate? I think I see a block heater.

Thx, and no Im not disappointed... wasnt being picky... it was the first N Ive seen go for under $1000 and they listed it as an 8N.

Havent looked at it yet really, busy weekend here.. I did try to start it once... was turning over fine and not making any ugly noises... but it didnt start either... fuel was pouring off the bottom of the carb any time the starter was engaged... so I guess the pump is working but maybe the needle is stuck or something.

I couldnt even find an on/off switch except a light switch style on the dash so not even sure I had power to the coil. Its been converted to 12v with an alternator... maybe they hid the switch... lol

15" front tires on it... according to tractordata 4x19" would be original??... and Im pretty sure the bright yellow seat with a deer on the back isnt original... it is well padded tho.. lol

If you can post some pics of the dash maybe we can help you
find the switch. It "should" be under the left side of the steering
column, but many of them have been moved over the years.
This short video of me starting my 9N briefly shows the key.

It does not have a fuel pump it is a gravity flow fuel system. Ignition switch on most if still correct will be at your left knee cap sort of under the sheet metal facing to the right. So the key goes in left to right if it has a key switch that is. Oh and by the way yes the engine will spin over with or with out the ignition on

I traced the wiring back to that light switch, upper left side of dash... typical old farmer fix...lol.... and got it cough a couple times, probably flooded it tho now... no new pics yet but I found #s on the rear diff, tranny and the engine, all differant... the engine #, 9N231xxx puts it to a 1946 2N according to tractordata.com

You are describing the position of the key switch for an 8N..The key switch for the 9N/2N is on the left side of the steering column.

The engine will only spin when in neutral if the safety interlock is working.

I managed to get it fired up late last night but had to work the throttle with one hand, choke with the other... apparantly the carb needs to come off for a good cleaning and inspection.

But... it didnt make any ugly noises so it looks promising, I'll rewire it and put in a proper ign switch, find some lights and a grill... basically I want it in good working condition and cleaned up nicely, but I wont "restore" it.

Pull your shift's rubber boot up where it grabs the shaft so that it isn't dished and able to hold a little rain water. :)
