Just wanted to stick my head in here and say HEY!!!!
Last fall I bought a 1942 2N with the Sherman Hi/Lo that had been converted to 12V. I used it for just last season and then the rings collapsed on me and I have been going through the little tractor with a fine toothed comb. I have lurked on this site for a while now and found a lot of valuable information that I have put to good use in my shop. Thanks for that info!!
Things that I have done to the tractor:
1. replaced the pump plunger (for a better lack of words) because the cotter pin broke off and the lift quit, also had to drain the trans fluid due to water contamination
2. rebuilt the carb, had a ton of rust in it from the garbage in the tank.
3. cleaned the tank and got clear silicone out of there :?:
4. rebuilt the engine, gov, water pump and repainted the engine
5. replaced the drag links, some idi...previous owner bent one to make room for the alt instead of making the front end wider (the joints were gone in them anyways)
6. replaced the wheel bearings and seals (the seals were a real blast just to find ones that would fit in the hub and seal on the spindle)
7. and waiting on the radiator to be repaired (there was enough Bardahl in there to seal up an aircraft carrier)
8. did some body work to the hood and fenders along with repainting them
9. redone the wiring and added an electric water temp gauge and tach (don't flame me for this, every car/truck that I have owned has had one and I feel weird without one)
I hope to have it up and running here within the next week. This is the very first tractor that I have ever worked on or ever owned. I have to blame an uncle of mine for getting me bit by the N-Bug!!! I use the little tractor for keeping our driveway somewhat smooth, and cutting the grass out in the field, but Kay will have a heavier job once she is running...pulling stumps. I have built a boom for her lift arms that has a trolley on it so I can lift things either close to the tractor or get into spots that I probably should not with it. I can post pics of her when she is done if anyone is interested.
When she first came home, she was in pretty rough shape. I had planned on taking my time with her and restoring parts at a time, but the engine going south on me kinda forced me to get some other things done to her while she was down. I also found out that the tool box on the fender was actually a 250 round 30 cal machine gun ammo box from 1954, 3 armor piercing and 1 tracer, I thought that that was pretty cool in itself.
The only sad thing is is that I am running out of time that I can work on her as I don't have a heater in my shop and winter is coming up.
