I'm going to look at a 706 gasser this afternoon. What are some of the things that I should look out for? Any special "quirks" with these models that I should be aware of?

Other than that they are not frugal on gasoline, there is no real issues with them. Normal things like the history of rebuilds, and a compression check.
A road gear check of the TA, and condition of tires etc, is always important. Loose hitch components reduce value, and require repair for quality use.
Charging systems and lights are easily fixed, and not as deal breaking as the other things. The condition of the hydraulic fluid, and engine oil is also an indicator of the care with which it was treated. Good luck, JimN
