Newbie intro

Hello group,
I"m a brand new Ford 8N owner. I"ve researched this and other forums to try to learn everything I can about these relics.

Allegedly this 8N is an early 1950 model, owned since 1980 by the previous owner. There is no visible serial number, not even a single number.

Here is what I have determined/identified from pictures and other literature (from the internet):
1. 48-54 clutch linkage
2. 47-49 steering box but with rounded arm per later boxes
3. single hole rocker
4. front distributor
5. shortened oil filler tube; moved rearward per 50-52 engine block
6. cast pads for left mounted generator but generator still on right side
7. engine block casting is: 8N C with marking rotated 90 degrees to the right
8. a data plate above the casting mark which reads: N B22 2 (Feb 22, 1952 - replacement date?)

I"ve read that the 8N C marking could indicate an engine which has been replaced. The original engine/tractor SN is supposed to be inscribed on the replacement block but often doesn"t happen.

This 8N, which annoyingly is blue, seems to be a Heinz 57. However, except for running a bit rich and smoking a little, with some additional work will prove to be a quite usable machine.

The over-running clutch arrived and prior to receiving it, I brush hogged about half an acre, just to get the hang of things.

Regards from Pennsylvania,

Welcome!
Running a cutter hard-coupled can be a good test, as long as you do it in the open where you can't run into, over, or through anything important. Try stopping quick and you get a real appreciation how far it will travel on momentum with you standing on the brakes.

The idiotic warning labels that come with every modern appliance or tool are doing a great job of training us to completely disregard most safety warnings.

Been there - done that...after reading about all the pitfalls.

Open field with no "targets".

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi and welcome.......2 mistakes with your post......1. no pictures......the guys on here for the most part can't read so pictures are nice....ROFL...they do love pictures...2. Only one? Man needs more than one tractor!

Hi Rick,

I'm on dial-up...pictures take forever...but maybe I'll find a wifi network and upload from my laptop.

Believe me, one tractor is more than enough for a newbie.

I have a 52 8n with the same casting number [N B22 2.It may be a replacement engine in your tractor, but that designates it to be a 52 engine. don b

(quoted from post at 20:37:18 08/04/11) Hey Wings,
Welcome to the board.
FYI, Blue paint makes em run better.

I think it's going to take new plugs rather than the paint (nothing wrong with blue, but I do like red!).
Pulled them out and besides being filthy with crud, the gap has increased to .032.

That's what I was thinking, but it's a front mount distributor so what year block is it really?

(quoted from post at 22:03:13 08/04/11) Welcome. Where in PA you keeping this tractor? I am near Gettysburg.

Kirk

Hi Kirk,
I'm in the thriving metropolis of Little Meadows, population 300 or so, in the NE part of the state. The NY border is 1/2 mile north of me with Binghamton, NY about 10 air miles to the northeast.

(quoted from post at 22:40:54 08/04/11) Could be an industrial engine.

I'm not familiar with what that might be, having not found any reference to one in my research.
Regardless, as long as replacement parts are available when needed.

Thanks, Colin.
On my way to get new plugs and a few other goodies.

Sorry for the large file but I can't make it smaller without pixelating it worse than it is.
