Newly planted oats

Out here on the west coast oats were commonly planted in the fall. I have seen lush crops fed off by cattle in February yet come back to make a bountiful harvest in June, July and August. I have seen oats planted in soil moisture under dryland conditions in April produce a good crop.

Farmers still plant grains as cover crops here in Wash.. Problem is; the huge flocks of Snow Geese. Swan, and ducks are wiping out the value of them as a crop. Many farmers are letting their fields go fallow, rather than waste money on seed and fertilizer.

There in Kansas; have you planted oats this early or earlier before ????
notice lots of oats planted in the past 2-3 weeks. Not unusual for them to be planted mid-late February. Checked mine today and they are showing down the row. Will get a picture in the next couple of days.

Just checked on them which were planted Feb. 29th, they are emerging. Should be able to see them in the row in a couple of days.

Checked on oats which were planted Feb. 29th. They are looking good, about 4-5 inches tall, but we are badly needing a rain. Have only received .3 of rain since planting.

Looks good. We got 2 inches of rain in about 20 minutes yesterday. Lots of wash outs. My early oats are up but I have more to seed with grass as soon as it dries up again. Tom
