I bought a NH rake back in the winter and the owner stated the gearbox leaked a little and sure enough he was right. Added 90 wt oil before first use and after raking for a couple of hrs there was the tell-tale signs and smell. How hard is it to replace both seals on this model? I understand they are both the same size.
Thanks inadvance.

If it's anything like a 56 rake, it's pretty simple. My Daughter was raking for me three years ago and said the rake wasn't working right. Checked and the bottom seal/bearing was gone! I replaced all the seals/bearings, then discovered that the case was cracked at the front side seal and was leaking oil there. Just packed it full of grease and check it once a year.

(quoted from post at 12:38:47 06/16/13) On my 256 the manual call the gear box to be filled with grease no oil.
I've done that before on rakes that were way over the hill, but this is a good solid rake and wanted to do the right thing. So I think I might go with 50-50 mix of grease and oil and see what happens.

New Holland recommends grease in that gearbox and has done so for DECADES!

Don't waste your time trying to keep 80W90 in that box.

Are we talking about the gearbox with the clutch and cable with the square oil fill plug on top like a auto/truck differential?

If you use chassis grease a least two tubes. Also (from personal experience)it's best to pack all the bearing buy hand.

That's the only gearbox on a 256.

It is against YT code to replace seals in a rake gearbox. If you admit to doing so you will be banned. Usually in this situation people use corn head grease. I tried chassis grease in my shredder gearbox. It stayed solid and the gears just ate grooves in it and none went into the bearings.
