NH 258 rake

I have a used NH 258 hay rake. It came to me with the rubber mount rake tines. I've seen both the rubber mount tines & spring coil tines advertized to fit this rake. Anyone know if either can be used or should it only be the rubber mount tines?

We always used the coil tine because the rubber tines would degrade in the sun and end up in tires. The old oem rubber tines held up better, or so it seems.

I think you need to use all one or the other.

It is very rare to see a rubber base tine on a New Holland rake in my region. I have seen it, so I know it can be done, but maybe one in 75 or 100 NH rakes will be rubber locally?

Looks like when using the spring coil type that you only mount two. My rubber mount tines are installed in banks of 3 but the coil spring in the third position ( when standing behind the rake ) hits the curved bars that divide each bank of tines as they rotate. Also, the youtube videos only show spring coil tines in banks of 2! Any thoughts?

I bought a used NH rake and converted to spring coil times. Many of the rubber types were missing or getting there. I have found the best way to prevent broken metal tines is to have good bar bearings. The bars wobbling causes undue fatigue apparently.

I have an old 56 rake that was my father in laws no paint only rust bought used in the 60s doesn't show to have ever had a brg on the bar's changed teeth have held up better than my newer 256. when you buy teeth buy nh teeth, if possible, they just last better than aftermarket ones do

I’ve had good luck with most aftermarket teeth, but I’ll agree original manufaturer is often a bit better.

About a decade ago I bought teeth from TSC, those were a hoot! Soft steel, they must have slipped through the hardening process. Could bend them like baling wire. They didn’t last the first windrow. Well, they lasted forever I guess, they just bent back and out of the way. Was only 3 spares I had bought so never took them back. Store is a few towns away. If I had both a dozen or three, I’d have taken them back!
