I have a NH 489 haybine. bought the machine from a small dairy farmer. It"s and old haybine, but had good maintenance and not many acres. Question I have is, looking at the parts manual it shows a u-joint where the pto shaft meets the gear box near the slip clutch and pivot point. I see no way to grease this joint. can"t see it or feel it, owners manual shows all the grease points, but not that joint. Has anyone had experiance with this.

It is there but the only way to grease it is to pull the tongue. We sold quite a few used machines years ago and if we pulled the tongue to haul them we would grease them then.

Thanks for the info Tom, not sure how far I want to go to grease this joint, but 25 years on factory grease sounds like a break down waiting to happen. How big of a job is it to pull the tongue ?

right. For the want of 5 cents of grease, my JD 336 baler shaft seized at the slip clutch, eventually chewed up the yoke which Deere charges $300 for now. Grease it.

When I worked for NH in the seventy's and the 489's came out, we greased them when we set them up and that was it. When the tongue was put in, the joint cannot be greased. To remove the tongue, support the machine and remove the upper and lower cap screws with bushings and pull out the tongue.[early models] The later ones had pins with tabs and cap screws. Takes two people to reinstall. It is a good idea to check the lower bolt-pin every week or so. The bolt ones had a tendency to break or fall out.....Ron
