NH 499 Haybine

I just bought a NH499 haybine at a auction for $2200 the unit looks to be clean and straight. The tin is in good shape. It has not been used for a few years. It came with two extra cutting bars. I'm not familiar with haybines in general so I'm going through the owners manual getting it field ready.
Any pointers I should know about the NH499? The serial number is 543604 any idea how old it is? Late 1980's?

Thank you,
Lance

We HAD one. Great thing watching it leaving the driveway!!! My only advice after three years of trying to get it to mow ( all the upgrades made for it, all the "experts" in the neighborhood working on it, ect)

RUN BROTHER RUN !! FAST AND FAR FAR AWAY!!!

I have a NH469. The post below says a 499 is junk, but not being specific is just silly. My 469 cuts very well these days but I replaced just about every moving part and also make sure the knife hold downs are set right. The 499 came out when discbines were also becoming popular, and discbines won. No haybine will out mow a discbine, but the used prices are sure nice.

We have a 499, bought it used in 2006, and it works well for us. It was a replacement for an old, wornout 495.

The two features I like most are the size, 12' versus 9' of a typical MOCO, which allows you to be more productive by cutting 33% more hay with each pass. Secondly the swing tongue is a helpful for cutting od shaped fields and for cutting in swaths rather than a constant circle.
