Will a NH 630 do silage bales? How does a nh630 compare to a Vermeer 504i? thanks in advance

Have a 630, but don't do silage with it. I do know that a "high moisture" kit was available, at least for the later 634 & 638 so you probably could get away with doing a very limited amount...

NH did not pass the 630/634/638 off as silage machines, if you are planning to do a lot of silage...then a silage kit machine like a 640 Silage Special would be more appropriate.

Yeah the silage would be limited. I just really like the simplicity of the 630. Are there any problems areas on them to look for? Thanks

I've only run it two seasons now, and it was well "used" when we got it, so I got quite acquainted with it so I've been over the whole machine from a preventative maintenance stand point.

Check for the usual stuff, hyd lines, bearings, wiring, belts/splices. Check that the CV joint isn't wore out. It's big bucks to replace (I guess not different than any other machine) My CV joint grenaded on me.....so it's now CV less (regular U joint now).. NH wanted about $1K for it. The main gear box is really the only other thing, but if it doesn't leak oil I don't see why it'd ever cause any issues. They are a fairly simple machine and everything is easy to get at, hardest thing to service would be a bearing on the sprocket side.

Pick up tines were "cheap" at NH so I was able to replace all the broken ones.

I find it easy to operate, book calls for 35 PTO HP, I run it on 42 PTO HP tractor at 4.4 MPH and only wish for more power going uphill with a full chamber.
